Hi All,

I'm afraid that this is not an isolated incident.

As a few of You will already know I used to drive these things and the Far Grimshader is a big girl for Yarmouth at over 80m length.

At that length there are very few places to turn one of these things around and one of them is opposite where the fishing boats moor near the port control/pilots building.

Without even thinking about any mechanical failures it takes an awful lot of nerve to commit these things into a swing in a fast flowing river like Yarmouth when you know that the vessel will travel 2 to 3 ship lengths down the river while you are doing it on a spring ebb tide.

When You do this on a ship like the Grimshader the driver takes a position at the aft end of the bridge and has crew members stationed forward and aft to give guidence by either gesture or VHF.

It is most disturbing when the crew member stationed aft is waving frantically at you to go ahead and a voice in your ear is muttering " not much room here skipper, best go astern" all while travelling sideways at 6 kts Question Question Blush

You mean the other Starboard then...
