As our 6 foot 10 ( at a squeeze) small boat has never made it under Potter Heigham, we planned a couple of nights through the bridge on Bittern - the picnic boat from Whispring Reeds that can be hired overnight. Well it could, but no more. In fact she won't be available to hire out at all . Whispering Reeds website has disappeared in the last couple of weeks and there is now just a holding page to explain that in their 60th year -2022- there are some changes coming, as well as a new website . Bittern will no longer be available at all. The summer season as far as they are concerned for other hire has been shortened and they intend to focus on the hire of canoes and kayaks in what they refer to as their efforts to contribute to the peace and tranquility of the area. Some electric day boat hire is coming, but no details as yet. So I thought I'd share this with the forum as it's public knowledge. I'm very disappointed about Bittern but then maybe not so if the peace and tranquility that we have seen up there is going to be somewhat different with groups of paddle booarders in particular, which adds up to more intrusion than one picnic boat. Unfortunately we find that groups of paddle boarders all shout to each other so maybe not the place for escape for us now. Yes I know a boat engine isn't ideal either. I'm passing my personal comments and opinion that's all. I am not a fan of paddleboarders on the Broads. Sorreeeee but I guess that away from the busier rivers is a good thing when talking about the safety aspects and the challenges for cruiser skippers which I have raised in the past. Maybe we need all the wild swimmers to go up there too .... not good for tacking yachts though! Anyway, I guess I'm only miffed cos I can't hire Bittern now and we'd intended to do it just as bloody Covid hit, so we've missed the boat now it seems ( sorry for the pun !) Thank you, I had a text message too from a member with suggestions. I'll be making some phone calls this week. So then we've just got the paddleboarders to sort..... Karen

It's alright, you can now get paddle boards with built in electric motors (a bit like electric scooters). They are capable of about 10 mph so can easily outpace any of the current BA patrol fleet. Graham

Really p1s*ed off about Bittern! We were going to hire her again before Covid hit and thought we may get a chance this year now Edited to add that I believe HW don't allow their picnic boats that side of the bridge? The older I get... The better I was....!!

Thats correct bill , HW don't allow there picnic boats above the bridge , Just rechecking on HW site , they have mentioned this " Please Note. There must be at least two adults on board the boat at all times. We do not provide pans or frying pans on any of our picnic boats. Whilst every effort is made, we cannot guarantee any of our Picnic boats will pass under Potter Heigham bridge at any time of the year due to tide and weather conditions. Under our discretion, on the day they may be passable." steve and vicky ( not a broads local,so my views ,knowledge doesn't count )
