The prime cause of this incident appears to have been running out of petrol. The mind boggles!

A part of me thinks, why bother taking proper precautions, like making sure you have enough fuel, a secured engine, breakdown cover, or a spare engine, when you can get free recovery, I assume it is a sort of free recovery. When it's down to neglect, can't the inshore rescue recover their costs against such a situation. On another point, I wonder if the boat was insured, had a toll plaque, and was upto date, and also had a current BSS certificate. Like a car with a bald tyre... the police then look further into the documentation, including ownership etc etc. So I wonder if the BA have looked into this. Maybe it is up to date on all points and it was a simple oversight by the helmsman..... Maybe. best regards, Richard. Can't wait to be back on our boat on the Broads.

Sad to see this big waste of time,I got the shout for this job but they did not want to pay for there foolishness,we were called out in the cold and dark for this person,who when called to tell me not to bother we have got the coast guard giving us a tow.no body had come to harm and the boat was not sinking,shame on them for abusing a service that saves lives,

Terry Perhaps you should have a stop list in case he calls you again for your assistance. you should also be entitled to your fee, no chance of this is there, perhaps he should be named and s!!!! John

Knackeredsailor, I suspect that this kind of behaviour gets more common as the number of boats on the Broads increases. If they didn't want to pay, that suggests they weren't covered by insurance. If your terms of business don't currently state that you will charge a callout fee once you accept the job, maybe they should (but you'd need to find a way to record phone conversations maybe insist on text message to confirm?)... Fings ain't what they used ter be.... I'm amazed that a big outboard would get detached in the first place. Even if it couldn't actually jump off at 5 knots, it must have wobbled visibly. And don't people chain the things on to stop them getting nicked, anyway?
