At my local we have a monthly country night - mainly Czech but very nice even for an Englishman - where I met a non-local by the name of Ben. He is my age -69- and started narrowboating in the U.K. upon reaching his retirement. He,s going on his 6th trip in June and says that he really loves visiting England, speaking English, and cruising the canals. He lives in a different part of Prague from me but gave me his E-mail address and I would like to attempt to convince him that there is much better boating to be had in a certain region of eastern England. Should I dangle the Broads carrot or should I stick to the ignorance is bliss philosophy. Dilemmas-R-Us, Prague 9.

Easy, introduce him to the Broads you can't get to know him while you are opening locks...Then if you can live on a boat you will be fine... Uncle Dave
The more I practice the luckier I get.

My main concern is for Bens welfare - short of falling into a lock he shouldn,t come to much harm on the canals - but for one of advanced years is it perhaps a little too much to expect him to skipper a Broads cruiser with no experience.I,m sure that most of us - whatever our ages are now - started when we were younger and aquired our knowledge and boat handling expertise over many years although obviously there are exceptions. Regards, Brian.

You should at least tell him about the broads and also try to find out what attracts him to the canals - exercise-history-walking-the people he is with- nostalgia etc. Remember your walks from Kilnhust, Swinton and Mexbrough. Great though the broads are for boating around and mooring up he may prefer the walking and 'lock-wheeling' lifestyle. We love the broads but prefer a boat with an open deck to stand on with a tiller.

Hello Mal,next week-end is final pub meeting for our forthcoming trip to Broads and I have invited Ben. I have also sent him contact details for all Hoseasons boating hols. Maybe he would like to join us on our next trip - he,s more than welcome. I don,t think he,s yet had the pleasure of cruising the Sheffield -South Yorks Navigation. Sithee later, Brian.

If he is fit enough to clamber out of locks and open the blessed gates, he will have at least basic handling and mooring ability, get him over here, just don't tell anyone else, do not want the place full of holiday makers using my rivers.

It's never to old to be introduced to the Broads and boat handling is just as easy to learn at 60 as it is at 16, not to introduce this poor delusional mariner to the Broads would be criminal act, IMHO of course. I didn't know you were from G.O.C. Byron? Dave

You may not have spotted my almost foolproof nom-de -guerre Dave, but the truth is I never got beyond the rank of signalman Royal Corps of Signals. As for new friend Ben, he will be 70 in January - 6 months older than me and I would like to think that he is well able to cope with Broads boating. All the very best 027 Sig.Byrongee.
