Hi Mate.

We have used the yard in the past and apart from one problem, cant really fault them, you get what you pay for,
some folk need older cheaper boats to suit their budget, saying that most of the above fleet have looked good this year,
and i do spend a lot of time afloat.
Dan H your turn mate you are the expert on this yard.

No wonder my ears felt warm!!

I tend to hire from this yard most times, and will be having three holidays with them this year - so I am happy with their boats and service.

The fleet has always been a large fleet, although is significantly smaller now than ten years ago.  They run a varied fleet of different craft and standards of luxury, all of which in my opinion are directly related to each boats hire charge - which to me is exactly how it should be.

If you pay less you should get a lower/older standard of boat maintained to a fair standard, and in good state of repair bearing in mind what you've paid compared to other boats on the system from other operators.    I am happy that they have this balance right, so I like hiring with them!!  New boats, old boats, totally refitted boats and somewhere inbetween boats - great!

For the size of the fleet the buildings are a bit primitive, but do their job and the site has good facilities including a basic, but decent cafe!

I can only remember one or two negative reports (one was very debateable anyway)  about them since this site started - not bad for the number of holidays they give people each year.

Diesel there isn't the cheapest on the system, but then a few operators charge similar so even if that is a rip off is debatable and open to personal opinion.

Finally - yard staff - always a great team, a pleasure to deal with. Reception staff - bit variable but never
too awful.....  does my rambling answer the question????!! Smile

Dan

I have hired Major Gem from Richardsons for the first week in August.  It was the only boat that was available for that week.  Claire, the girl I spoke to had it listed as an independant hire (whatever that means).   Anyhow, after asking a few questions she knew this would be an ideal boat for me, my daughter and a gang of her mates all to pile onto for a week.

So for Richardsons...so far so good...will let you know more when I get back.

Aha... interesting

The Major Gem's have disappeared from Hoseasons and New Horizon brochures for this year.. they used to run four so must have decided to run one or two of them for the main season this year.

Here's a few pictures of one of them - might give you an idea

All the best, glad you got something booked - enjoy!

Dan

Hi plackett16. Hired from Richardsons (San Elena) for the first time last October. I avoided them for many years, but noticed an improvement in the turnout of the boats. I was also persuaded by quite a few positive Richardssons die-hards on this forum!

Wasn't disappointed by the boat & everything worked on it fine (you should be able to search for my post about the holiday if you search under 'San Elena'. Service from the yard was efficient rather than particularly spectacular, but was everything you'd expect from a yeard that size.

Simon
