it will be interesting to see how much of the visitor moorings are lost to this venture. I find it strange that despite us constantly being told that the hire boat yards are struggling and needed help to survive by reducing tolls, that most of the yards seem to be investing heavily and new yards are springing up.
if it is to be it is up to me.

I don't think that many yards are investing that heavily - of the yards that are left only a few are investing and the number of new boats annually even you must admit, is pretty low! So how many new boats are being put into the hire fleets annually? Somewhere between 10/12 at a maximum and thats being over generous I think. In many cases that is being funded by the disposal of older boats so fleet sizes are not necessarily increasing much. Indeed I don't think that the yards could produce more if they tried! They remain very labour intensive to build and in the very short term the opening of WRC is muddying the water a bit - at the moment we do not know where the boats are coming from but at least one looks like coming out of the old Ferry fleet, they have another in build at the moment plus another due perhaps later in the year. I am not sure that WRC are actually building one in their shed or not but they may well be hoping to nick more staff as they have already done, from Horning! We shall see. NBD will be doing one or two, and Clive will be building one or two as well, as will BB - I am struggling even to get to 10! Any more ideas anyone?

Hi, I think we are looking at about 17 new cruisers for 2019 including WRC. NBD_Faircraft 2x Fair Marquess Barnes 1x Brinks Serenade although I believe they are also working on the old Alpha moulds so something else maybe along in the next year or so Ferry are building a new 42ft Dual steer Richardsons I think they are building 2 Commanders and a new sedan boat is due for the Summer Herbert Woods will have 4 new boats 2x Prince of Lights (similar to Adventuring) and 2 Gleaming Lights (based on the Broom Commodore/Captain mould) Brooms are building 2, an Explorer (no3)and another Captain (no 11) Waveney River Centre-not sure possibly 3/4 new in 18/19 and 1/2 second hand boats probably financed by the sale of Ferry Marina or atleast the hire fleet to the Cator family. This is about average for new builds as there are usually between 10 and 20 every year although generally only the big 5 that build (Broom is the exception) The smaller companies don't have the finances to cover new builds Silverline who usually build every 2 years don't appear to be adding a new build this year. Just though I would clarify my earlier post, the new builds aren't all expansion and are usually linked with boat sales. NBD Faircraft have sold 2 to Richardsons (Fair Diplomat) Barnes have withdrawn/selling atleast 5 boats inc 2 Brinks Sonatas, 1 Brink of Peace, Supreme Star and a Merrymore Richardson have sold/selling 10 boats Herbert Woods have sold/selling about 10 boats in the last year or so including Glimmering Lightx2, Malvern Lightx 2 and Sparkling Light,Swan Light and a couple of Connoisseurs Therefore the overall hire fleet size is still shrinking all be it at a more gradual rate. Marshy, look at brooms alone, reintroduced the fleet with t boats 3 years ago and must have 30 now wiith more in the pipeline. Captain, new or replacement there has been several million spent in the last few years in an industry that is supposed to be struggling? Dave
if it is to be it is up to me.

I don't think I would use Brooms as a shining example of expansion, to be fair. I may be doing the new owners an injustice but longer term I do not really think so - they managed to turn a plan to build more boats and a new factory into a housing development and I believe have managed to extract value out of a flourishing niche market builder. I accept that they have built instead a nice hire fleet but others would suggest that hire fleets are not really making the kind of money venture capitalists demand! As far as I am concerned the jury is still very much out on that whole operation and I remain unconvinced! There is possibly more to it all than meets the eye methinks but I just hope I am wrong!!
