Hi all..With Richardsons dominance of the broads, why don't they have a yard on the southern waters ?.

Maybe it doesn't look like they could make a go of it. Many reputable yards in the South have closed, many are struggling, why would a successful business like Richardson's take on a market that is unlikely to match the profits that the North could bring. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. When first timers ask about the Broads, we are too eager to say stay North. The South has too many strong currents, high tidal differences, etc. we have all said it. The marketing for the South has to change, maybe market the area for those with several holidays of boating experience, experienced crew are also important. Make the South special for those with experience, it's all about unique selling features. Now with a strong data base of customers, ie proven track record, then, just maybe Richardson's could be the one to make it happen. Those hiring in the South would be unique, special crews, give their boats "platinum" recognition, a special burgee, special livery. Just a thought. Let's exploit the South, there are some great areas down there.
best regards, Richard. Can't wait to be back on our boat on the Broads.

We wanted to cruise the Southern Broads but, as first timers, we were strongly advised to stick with the Northern Broads. I'd love to visit the south part but unless we were passengers/crew on a boat captained by an experienced Broads user we would not. I can see why boatyards are nervous about opening yards on the Southern Broads and agree entirely with what has been said by Rustic. DaveHR If you cannot say anything nice, best not to say anything.

Hi, I am bit of an anorak when it comes to boat bookings, to the extent that I monitor the bookings of certain yards using website availabilty charts (sad I know). Looking at Swancrafts boats last year they had average bookings of approx 24.5 weeks at the season end for the eleven boats, a very good figure for the southern rivers. Those same boats from Stalham/Acle are showing 29.2 weeks so far possibly the best booking figures I have seen in recent years, only Royalls of Wroxham have come close. So unfortunately they don't need to run from the South, its cheaper and more popular to run from a large yard in the North. Sadly I love the peace and quiet of the South and are now running out of yards and boats to hire from! Neil

DAVEHR Hi Dave, I wouldn't worry too much about going 'down south'. They really are peaceful and serene expanses. We've also been advised to stay north of yarmouth but they were mostly concerned about breakdown cover as it was out of season. As far as the transit through yarmouth goes, it's not as bad as some will make out. So long as you arrive roughly around low tide (or preferably soon after) you'll have an easy trip. Allow an hour or so to get to the top of Breydon and the southern broads are there to enjoy. DaveB

It's also the rise and fall of the tide we were worried about. I could see us mooring somewhere, going to a local pub, getting back to the boat and finding it two feet higher than when we left. Our mobility issues would mean sitting on the bank, waiting for the tide to ebb before being able to get back on board.

It's really not that bad. I find people tend to exaggerate when they mention the South. I've never had a problem and neither has anyone else I know.

Thanks both for your helpful replies. I'll look at the southern Broads in greater detail for next year. Thank you

One highlight of any of our broads trips is a carvery at the Wherry hotel on Oulton broad. It's a quiet journey down from breydon and a lovely meal with a view from the hotel. We then usually take the 20 mins trip around the corner for a quiet night. Can't wait for October. DaveB

Please stop trying to 'sell' the southern broads, they are fantastic now with two yards less! ( I know I am being hopelessly selfish.) Crossing Breydon south to north yesterday, the number of boats travelling south looked like an armada coming towards us! Two weeks spent south and getting moorings wherever we wanted them was bliss. Having said that, the north really doesn't seem too busy this week.
