Take myself last August.  I moored in Le Boat's yard over night on a Friday. Indeed there were two other boats from other yards moored there too.

I knew I would need to be away before their customers returned on the Saturday morning so just after 8:00am a chap came down the quay and said:

'Good morning, just to let you know if you could leave the mooring by half eight so we have space for our boats coming back'.

Polite you see and I and the other two boats were leaving by quarter past. So there are ways you can get a point over to someone rather than to bang on the roof of a boat and be rude (or perhaps simple a little too direct). Naturally the otherside of the coin could be the guy from Barnes saying  I simply tapped on the boat and asked the occupants to depart shortly.

A well set out complaint would be a far better way of dealing with it, at the very least you would be offered an explanation and most likely an appology.

What I am not keen on is business being bashed online when something goes wrong.  For every unhappy customer Barnes will have 100s of satisfied ones and its worth keeping that in mind if anyone reading is new to boating, threads like this can cost people business in the long term when it wasn't even the owners responsible or brought to their attention shortly after.  Barnes are not the only yard you might get a telling off for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, I can think of another well known yard where I was spoken to very rudely by the owner I might add for something seemingly as insignificant so believe it or not ut can happen anywhere.

Cheers
Mike

Mariner, be fair, it was a Barnes employee, not Barnes itself. I have no axe to grind on this one but I can see that someone was an *rs*-hole and yes, I would have considered complaining to Mathew Twaits, but that doesn't alter the fact, it was a member of the turn-round staff, possibly a part-timer, not the yard itself. It is also a fact of life that what upsets one person causes no offence to another.

Jenny Morgan,
A vane, a boat, but not a bird.

I have to agree with the mariner, I was moored up opposite to yourself and was asked to move.  One of the problems we had was that we asked the evening before and they said it was ok.  The weather was appalling with the wind.  The wind was blwoing the boat back against the shore and not one barnes staff came to help us.  Was going to booa boat with them next year, but not now on principle.  Royall were brilliant and let us stay with them until the winds had calmed down.

Many thanks

So Barnes are not responsible for the behaviour of their employees!

If there is a problem with any of their employees, tell
Matthew or Daniel. A polite word may well get
the desired result. If either Matthew or Daniel don't
know, it will happen to others won't it?
I have found both of them very approachable
provided
you don't go with all guns blazing or you'll be on a
hiding to nothing.
I would suggest a well written Email to either of them
and see what sort of response you get.
Asking for the employee to be sacked/pistol
whipped/hanged
will achieve nothing, just state the facts and that
you were 'most upset' and then let us all know the
reply.

The older I get...

I have to agree. Having a moan on a public forum will achieve absolutely nothing, other than to perhaps make the OP feel better. Why not take it up with Barnes. How else are they to know. Its possible they never come on to this forum!. Barnes's  are the only people who can deal with this complaint, so why not give them the opportunity.
