After over 41 years of hire boating with either Blakes or Hoseasons we decided to go the independant route this year.So in July we arrived to pick up our Freedom boat.I have never been on such a dirty boat and on the following morning be had to get the toilets pumped and there was very little oil in the engine. Not the start to the holiday we expected and one we will not repeat.
This question is probably going to go against the grain for woody fans but here goes: Would it be possible (engine size/power) to hire one of the older auxiliary yachts and just potter* around (*bonus, would be able to get under that bridge) in the Northern rivers with the mast/sails down all the time. Just to try and recapture the nostalgia of a pre-60s Broads.

Possible but very uncomfortable and worrying dangerous for you damage deposit. Masts and booms do not sit comfortably on your cabin top, meaning it will be a pain to live with (no ability to raise the cabin roof to give you reasonable headroom) and they overhang the back of the boat when lowered making it highly likely you will wreck the mast in mooring manoeuvres.
If you want to recapture the atmosphere of pre-1960s hire boating go to Martham Boatbuilding and Development Company.
