Thank for your input from the Berney, it will be good to see answers to queries raised and for clarification to be given.

From a personal perspective, this not somewhere we visit, so we haven't commented,  but I have one observation at this point,  just to pick up on the comment that only private owners are causing problems....

...it is likely only to be owners who would question the validity of being charged because most hirers generally don't know any better about where to expect charges and many first timers will not know or read anything of the history of the place etc. I'm not defending anyone who has caused problems, I'm just pointing out that the likelihood of any misconceptions about charges etc are more likely to come from privateers.  There have been instances in other locations of "phantom" fees being collected and I guess the more regular visitors (and thus a greater number of owners ) will be more questioning.

Hopefully this forum can help clarify matters with your input BerneyA.

I just decided to have a look at the Berney Arms cafe Facebook page as I noticed it had been mentioned earlier in the thread...

A post on there yesterday, from the business itself, says that due to people messing them about the charges are £10 overnight and £5  during the day  " no matter what, even if you use the cafe"

I thought I would add that information here for those of you who do not use Facebook.

In reply to Karen& Mike. How can you use the cafe when it is not open for business. I was there on Monday and the part about the cafe on the mooring notices has been covered with black tape.
And yes I saw hirers moor up then approached for mooring fees, but they soon moved on.

The Berney arms moorings were well used up to the time when Chris Shepherd the land lord of the Berney Arms sadly passed away in late 2006. Up to that time it was usual to see the moorings full on a weekend from The Berney Arms to upriver of the Berney Windmill and sometimes boats were moored two deep.Chris used to charge for the overnight moorings but reimbursed the mooring charge when people went into the pub.  The pub was extremely popular with private boats and hire boats as well. Now that the pub is closed the moorings are virtually deserted at most times. Wish the owners of the cafe adjacent to the pub all the best in their new venture to once again attract boats to the moorings. It would be good to see the pub opened again
and running to the same standard as Chris and the other land lords used to run the pub. Chris ran the pub for approx. 6 years before he passed away. His roast duck, large local cod and chips and home made wine were exceptional.

Not being a Facebook user, this is what's posted on the public page. It seems it's FREE to moor daytime if you use the cafe otherwise it's £5 daytime and £10 overnight.

Hi all do to so many people messing me about the moorings are £5 a day and £10over night if the cafe is OPEN and you USE it you can moor for the day for FREE but Even if you use the cafe its still £10 for over night mooring!! I hope all can understand this thanks

With a free 24 hour mooring only yards away I think I would try to use that first unless the cafe can tempt me with something special. Smile .
I couldn't find a menu or opening times on their page???

Just to clarifyI can assure you that the post of 18 July on Facebook by the Berney Arms said exactly what I stated above. However,  that post was edited by them yesterday at 2308 with the additional comments added.  Perhaps a change of heart ....

I hadn't seen that it had been edited. I would like to see them post a pic of the menu. I can eat almost anything but Ruth needs gluten free.
I wish them every success but they will have to put in long hours to get the customers in.

Pootled past yesterday afternoon, just the same two boats there. Two chaps on the bank one of which was kicking seven bells out of a beautiful decorative plaque underneath a classy stainless steel bench which was erected in memory of someone I believe. obviously thought it would be nicer on his boat. Or perhaps he wanted to sell it to raise money for a bath.

Hi M ,
If you read a few posts on recent threads , according to some members that were to stop moaning / complaining about this bad behaviour because it's only a small minority that are doing it , and the complainers are in a smaller group than the minority who are doing this bad behaviour,
