No comparison Hedgy, the car park by the Swan isnt run by the Swan and the owners of the Swan dont receive the cash from it.

To be fair, wasn’t comparing. Just wondered if there were any discounts or similar , offered to patrons of the pub who used the car park..

If I were to compare, then maybe I could suggest that the moorings at the Thurne are owned by the farmer and if the farm didn’t offer them out then they would be nothing to do with the Lion.

No Hedgy for the same reason, the proceeds from parking dont go to the pub. Ive no problem with paying to moor, as we often do at Outon and Beccles but to pay to moor to pay already inflated prices seems a bit much to me.

TT - two little points!!

I actually do not think the prices at the Lion are inflated at all - this proves it is all a matter of opinion! Indeed on balance I think they are on the cheapish side but all that proves is we must eat in entirely different places! And as SOME others have said, I would happily pay for a decent mooring - I know how much new quay heading is and it can be mind bogglingly expensive.

And as far as the Swan car park is concerned, I think it might be owned at least in part by M&B - the pub owners. It has suddenly all become ANPR controlled with a camera and the bit nearest the river, does have special facilities for pub residents to use. Now whether this is for people using it for just a meal or drink ,I do not know but the advent of APNR would suggest it is not Council run and that it is connected, at least indirectly to the pub. They also own the moorings in front of the Southern Comfort up towards the club.

Put me right if I am wrong, though!

Regarding the Lion at thurne I agree, good food and excellent beer.
As for mooring it is only £5 for the night and according to the web site you get 10% off breakfast
As someone said Salhouse is £10 and you get nowt
I would also add that since it changed hands it is well worth a visit so you can make your own mind up

Important points i may add whether helpful or not to any arguments...

moorings... I own neither side of the moorings and rent them separately to the pub. I pay insurance on our side and the farmer pays insurance for his side. this is in addition to my normal pub insurance.
we make no profit from mooring fees and actually made around a 5k loss last year and that is without taking in to account any staff costs to collect the fees.

pricing... every pub works to a different margin and generally will be based on what their other costs are. I have spoken with some other landlords in the past and my rent is one of the biggest around in the area by comparison along with paying above minimum wage wages and pension contributions thus means our margins need to be higher than some others. we have price checked though and seem to be on par with similar sized venues such as acle bridge, fur and feather, new inn etc.
Food costs continue to rise above inflation and so does the minimum wage

chip gate... the different descriptions are purely a fault of bad editing, we offer 'skinny fries' which are belgian frites or 'thick cut' which are skin on thick chips. the menus will be amended this week.

you folk on this forum have been invaluable in helping get our businesses going and continue to provide actionable feedback but i have to try and make a profit (which I haven't yet)

Marshy, nothing to do with price, it is overpriced for what you get in my opinion. I have paid hundreds of pounds for a meal for 2 and whilst it was delicious, it wasnt value for money, (I have also paid similar and the food was fantastic and the service and setting made it vfm as well) I have paid £20 for a meal for 2 and whilst nothing special, great value .for money. The Lion in my opinion serves very ordinary food (nothing wrong with that) but ar inflated value for what it is.
Money isnt the question, value is and both the beers and food at the Lion are overpriced imo
As for the car park at the Swan, I will bow to your local knowledge but being anpr controlled doesnt preclude it from being council controlled.

if it is to be it is up to me.

Thank you for the explanation, Pubman. I don't regard 'skin-on chips' as proper chips and avoid places that serve them. Your choice of menu provision, but my choice on spending.
