Have been told the Berney Arms is open again. Has anyone been past lately to see if anything is happening
down there? It would be great if it re-opened as it
could be a super pub with the right people

We were on the Berney moorings on Saturday and Sunday. The pub is closed and there is a for sale board outside. Its been closed now for over a year I guess with a succession of tenants in recent years who all have moved on.

To be fair though Kemrock, whilst it COULD be a good pub, it may lack something without any customers!!!!

With only a few boats stopping in the summer and no public road access, it is a bit of a non starter!!!

Years ago the rivers and creeks of East Anglia were littered with these lonely pubs. Their customers were the truckers of their day but they moved the goods by water. The nearer to London the busier the traffic, Essex having many waterside inns a few of which still survive. The keepers of such establishments nearly always having a second or third trade and income.
But London has not needed thousands of tons of Hay for many years and with the loss of trade so the pubs went. It is a miracle the Berney has lasted this long. Without the leisure and holiday boats it would have gone years ago. But October to April is a long time to last without takings and the really high season is probably not much more than ten weeks.

Certainly not open on Saturday.  For sale board still up with graffiti on it, closed painted on the upstairs windows.

The pub has gone downhill in the past few years and I cant see it ever opening again as a public house, if it did it would operate at a substantial lose if tenants were in the pub.In view of its position the pub is without a supply of mains water and is not connected to the main sewage system although it is connected to the mains electrical supply.

Stopped off at the Berney Arms yesterday, some work had been done, the ex café to the left of the pub had been painted as had some of the trestle tables, although in lurid colours with a lot of paint ending up on the brickwork. There was a notice propped up against the pub sign, saying " Due to unforeseen circumstances we have been unable to open the pub"
There was no one around. We sat outside  having a picnic in the beautiful weather. Such a difference to before it closed last August when Joe and Mandy ran the pub.
Come on you lottery winners its worth saving!!!

Well it looks like goodbye to the Berney Arms, an application has been submitted to The Broads Authority to turn it into a dwelling. Very sad news.
