Then it's in the business's best interest to sell a quality product instead of cr*p. I'm sorry but a company offering such rubbish doesn't deserve to stay trading. I did go back to complain but it was closed. It was after 7 after all !!!!!!

I don't think this is trial by forum either. Hopefully someone connected with a business that has had a poor review will read it and try to change the service it offers. Going back to the original subject, I know someone who actually likes the the food from Horning Fish Bar, though I suspect he's in the minority. I think it goes to prove that it's mainly down to personal preference.

Sad really, one day somebody is going to go after this forum. Far too much one sided comment. So you could not complain because they were closed at 7pm - why should they not close at 7 pm. Could you have not have contacted them subsequently.

Sorry I have no reason to question your assessment of the food quality but I do question the way you are dealing with it.

Any business can have an off day so I tend to base my judgement on multiple visits. I also read comments on here and other forums and they form a part, but not all of my decision making process when deciding  to visit somewhere, we all like different things. As a regular on here you also get to know who's opinions you value or place more trust in.

I have used the Horning fish bar a couple of times and found it to be extremely good, in 2011. In 2012 3RR weekend it was mediocre but very busy. In 2013 the night before the forum meet I decided to give it another go and it was absolutely dire. There seems to be a trend going on there.

The Ali Spice in Coltishall is not a place I have used before, didn't actually know it existed, but Debbie's comments about it mean that I shall give it a try sometime soon. Her positive review has probably gained The Ali Spice at least one new customer. Her negative review of The Horning Fish bar only reinforces my recent bad experiences of the place and mean I am unlikely to visit again until I hear it has changed hands, had some good reviews, or am desperate for fish and chips and stuck in Horning.

As for the chippy at Potter, it was multiple bad experiences there that led to me using The Horning fish bar in recent years Smile

The best chippy has to be the one a short walk from Yarmouth yacht station. Can't remember where it is but the rangers pointed me in the direction of it. Sometimes "pause to wait for the tide" whilst grabbing fish and chips when transiting through Yarmouth.

Happy to support the honest and reliable pubs and businesses of The Norfolk Broads.

Travellingman,

If I go to an expensive restaurant and get bad food or service I will complain there and then, and if I want give a bad review here or on any of the other multiple review type sites, based upon how my complaint was dealt with. If I pay £6 for fish and chips and it turns out to be mediocre or bad I probably won't go back to complain unless the food was dangerous to health in someway, contained a foreign object or was raw etc. However I will be unlikely to return and if asked would not recommend them. I am also very likely to reinforce or back up someone else's claim of poor quality food at the same establishment.

Places that are consistently good don't seem to get many complaints and if and when the rare one does get aired it is often put into context by lots of people praising how good the place normally is. A lesson to be learnt by those establishments that regularly get bad reviews.

As for one sided trial etc. In this day and age I'm sure most businesses are aware of forums, review sites such as tripadvisor etc. If I started a take away, restaurant, pub etc, one of the first things I would do is monitor those sites to see how I'm performing and where I could improve.

Take a look at The Waters Edge on Tripadvisor. The manager responds to each and every review whether it be good or bad with either thanks or an explaination and tries to put things right.

Happy to support the honest and reliable pubs and businesses of The Norfolk Broads.

I for one am not a fan of any business being dissected in public forum remaining on record for years to come for anyone to read, word of mouth is far less damaging.  I think if you have an issue you should go to the business itself and make your complaint known to them, it can only help it to improve its services.

However, when I was is horning I often used the Fish Bar and found it to be of excellent quality, I know for a fact the proprietors have very high standards and are experienced caterers. I am sure they would feel dissapointed they had some unhappy customers if they read this.

I've used the Horning Fish Bar twice now - and it was alright on both occasions, not amazing not bad tasted good and filled me up.

I would have gone there again however it was shutting up so I walked into Horning and to the Swan and had a lovely sit down meal there.

A note on 'trial by forum' (or indeed internet) - thsi is how things are now and leave aside formal sites like this or review sites, it is peoples own Facebooks and Twitter accounts that have to be taken into account.

One might post on their timeline "On Holiday in a lovely village called Horning - Great Fish & Chips!" equially they may put that same post on a boatyards Facebook page all good - but what if their experience was not that and in fact poor, or they thought it was not very good value, or good food - it is their view and their choice to share that with others globally.

Sadly few businesses have the time or knowledge to monitor what is being said about them and reply, promote or counter such (or learn from it). It would do any business owner good to 'Google' their name and search Twitter for it to see what people are saying - good or bad.

I see what your saying Robin but I would always take any complaint to the place I was complaining about in the first place, give them chance to rectify it I think thats fair dont you?  I dont really see the sense in writing it online untill you have atleast done that.  I am not condoning bad business operators but peoples expectations differ so much whats good for one may not be good for another.  Also people are born complainers these days, me included but its extremely difficult to please everyone all of the time.  I would have refused to take it when it was being wrapped or if not noticed till I got back to my boat/home or whatever I would have returned anyway.  Theres a chippy near me that I used once when I moved in and I refused to take the fish when the guy was wrapping it.  It was overcooked to the point it had gone like rubber, he wasnt happy about it but I bet they took more care after that !
