Remember visiting Beccles around 1970 and there was a pub/restaurant on the staithe, think it had not long opened and was called The Loaves & Fishes, does anybody know if it is still there or anybody remember it?

Duncan Hi,
I'm pretty sure it's closed down.

Kind Regards
Alan...

Hi Duncan,
We were they in July, and sadly it is closed. Could have something to do with one of the back walls coming away from the main building, and sitting at an interesting angle. Shame as there's nowhere to eat close by, unless you count ice cream and snacks, and not that many pubs left open in the town centre.

Duncan Hello again,
I believe the closest decent pub serving food is The Bear and Bells on the way to town by the bus station.
The closest watering hole is the snooker club which is open to the public very near the Yacht Station almost opposite The Loaves and Fishes.

Kind Regards
Alan...

We've been visiting Beccles for several years now and it was closed the first year we went and has never reopened, as far as I know.  It is a shame that there's nowhere to eat in the evening near to the yacht station.  It's quite a walk into the town.  We got a taxi into the town last year, as the weather wasn't too good.  Can't remember how much it cost, but don't think it was too expensive. Smile

It closed years ago and judging by the last meal we had there a fish sarnie would have been the best option. There is chippie about half way into town, turn left at the crossroads.

If you are a British Legion member, there's the BL Club in Newgate, if you just want a drink. Don't bet on it being open, though. As with all voluntary establishments, times can be hit and miss. Uncle used to be treasurer, before his passing, it was good then, but haven't been for many years, so . . . who knows?

Bear and Bells is good, and if you can get under the old bridge, Waveney House Hotel has one mooring, I believe, possibly bookable?

PS. There's also the Caxton Arms, a little further up from the BL club, and just round the corner from the Bear and Bells, but I've never been in there. Honest, Guv!

Regards, Ray.

If it's neither here, nor there, then where is it?

Thanks to all for your replies regarding Beccles Loaves & Fishes, closure is the sad fate of a lot of good pubs nowadays, I have not been to the Broads since the mid 70s and often wonder if the things I recall would still be there.
