Coach and horses on Thorpe Rd. Easily accesible from 3 moorings: 1 Norwich itself - some out of NYS (by the "office" area), cross the road that is front of you as you come up the steps, walk to the right and then turn left and follow the road up the hill for about 5 mins 2. Commissioners Cut 3. Thorpe Green In 2 & 3 follow the main road in to Norwich - anout a 15 - 20 min walk. Pub brews all the ales it serves and the food is outstanding!

Because there is relatively fewer people on the Southern Broads, you'll find that in order to survive most pubs cater to the locals, and as a consequence almost all the pubs serve several good real-ales. The same can't be said for some of the establishments up North. There are one or two that IMO can be a bit hit and miss, but I generally find the worst pub on the Southern Rivers is no worse than an average pub on the Northern ones.

The majority of pubs on the Broads do sell real ale, but most are quite unimaginative - Woodfordes Wherry and Adnams Broadside seem to be the norm. Norwich has a selection of excellent real ale pubs, if you want to know more let me know. Otherwise ones I can remember with a better than normal (either more, or just different) choice have been Berney Arms (Humpty Dumpty beers), Geldeston Locks also sells good real ale, Lord Nelson at Reedhan had some good beer when I was last there as well. I'm sure others will suggest different places.

Things have improved massively in real ale terms on the South in the last few years. The Reedcutters at Cantley always has an exciting selection, the Lord Nelson at Reedham is great and the Ferry at Surlingham has transformed itself under new ownership (also good for food). This year I've had decent pints at the New Inn at Rockland and White Horse at Chedgrave. I haven't been there yet, but the Coldham Hall promises real ale among other enticements. When the Wherry at Langley, the Railway at Reedham and the (not very good) Red House at Cantley were all closed, the South was a bit of a desert but this has all got better.

Hi there I can recommend another very good real pub in Norwich, that being the White Lion in Oak Street. It's a Milton Brewery pub but has a good, line in guest alesand normally has 5 or 6 on at a time (a long with a very palatable real lager). It's a bit of a walk from the Yacht station, but IMHO well worth a visit. As to directions, follow the river as best as you can, i'd go along riverside heading North to the Ketts Hill roundabout, turning left walking past a restraunt that used to be the city morgue, past the new BA offices and an old church that now houses a puppet theatre, then crossing the road (by the roundabout) you then follow the path that runs alongside (but not over) the flyover, crossing over Magdalen Road, until you get to a third RA, again crossing straight ahead following the road, and Oak street comes up on the left with the pub in plain sight, it should take an able bodied walker about 25 - 30 minutes at a guess. Hi Paul (and Jill!) My husband, Simon is in charge (of the real ales) at the White Horse Chedgrave and he is very proud of his cellar. We usually have at least 5 real ales on, typically Timothy Taylor Landlord, Black Sheep Bitter, Deuchar's IPA (being a Scot, I insist on this one, as does Alfred, our oldest customer!), Woodforde's Wherry and a new guest ale every Friday. He's also recently won an award for his keeping of real ale and holds Cask Marque status. When my husband gets a rare hour off of an evening and wants a pint, he has reported that he gets a great pint of Landlord at the Loddon Kings Head ("as good as mine") and, if we're having Chinese takeaway, he'll nip into the Angel at the top of the village for a swift half - with no complaints there either! Foodwise, the White Horse serves food 7 days a week and the Kings Head also does food - I'm not sure if it's 7 days a week - think it is during the summer) plus there's the Dilraj Bangaldeshi restaurant and several takeways (not to mention Bridge Stores and the Co-op for stocking up on your onboard supplies). So if you moor up at Pyes Mill or Loddon Staithe, you shouldn't struggle to find a decent pint in Loddon/Chedgrave. Enjoy your holiday!! Karen
