Hi all,

I am taking ‘Tumblehome’ out on the coming bank holiday and bringing along a friend who helped me a lot with the restoration work.

I have not been to Loddon for years and wanted to go that way, can anyone recommend a really nice pub/restaurant in that area? (I like the fur and feathers, recruiting sergeant on the northern rivers so something similar would be great)

Also heard there have been some issues with drunken kids bothering boats at the staithe up there? Anyone know if these are just overblown rumours or is it a real issue?

Cheers

Jeremy

The Kings Head in Loddon will give you a warm welcome, and is becoming my local when i'm at the boat.

White Horse at Chedgrave (turn right from the moorings at Loddon about 1 minutes walk round the corner) has always been nice.

Other watering holes on Southern Broads, Locks Inn Geldeston, not sure how big your boat is as to whether you would get under Beccles bridge, but if you do well worth a visit.

The Ship or Nelsons Head at Reedham, Berney Arms just after Breydon.  Kings Head Somerleyton, (a bit dearer but cracking food).

Reedcutters at Cantley, we stopped there last year for a pint or 2 and it was very nice, we didn't eat, but the menu looked good, and it has had good reports.

The Yare at Brudall, I think you would have to moor at one of the boatyards for this, as I don't know of any river moorings nearby, (I might be corrected on this).  We often have a bite to eat here before we pick the boat up at Swancraft, and it has always been very good.

The Waveney gets good reports although we haven't been ourselves for a while.

There are plenty of others, Surlingham Ferry, New Inn, Beauchamp Arms understand these have all changed hands since last season so you would have to take recommendations from someone who has had chance to visit.

Hopes this gives you a few ideas.   Cheers

Of the Loddon / Chedgrave pubs The White Horse is probably closest to the kind you would appear to like.  Whist it may be tempting fate, no there are no major problems with mooring in Loddon just occasional minor difficulties but that could be said of a lot of places.

Anyone with a dog be aware that some of the mares now on the watermeadow are in foal and are a bit 'protective'.

Bit late for this post but have just returned from week on broads and can really reccomend the white horse at Chedgrave, probably the friendliest and committed landlord we encountered and the food was excellent too...try the homemade cheesecake!

Went down there on the bike yesterday and met Bill Maxted in the shop opposite the staithe to buy a pair of life jackets. He then recommended a cuppa and scones from the tea shop almost next door, who put it all on a tray for us to take down to the staithe. Very nice it was too. Would recommend having their full English in the morning if mooring there as the price makes it preferable to cooking it yourself! We will when down again in 4 weeks time Smile
Thanks for the help Bill.

You only get one body, please it as often as you can! I do....
Morgage free at last!

bosshog - Karen from the White Horse here - thanks for your kind posting about my 'committed' husband Simon at the White Horse - we took the pub over just over a year ago and Simon has never worked harder at anything in his life to try and make a success of it.  Comments like yours reminds him of why he does it!
Thanks again.  He'll be pleased as punch when I tell him!

Karen Smile
