Doeasn't seem likely the Maltsters will be opening soon as email I had from Punch Taverns about a fortnight ago still had it as available and on the market.

Nige

Who ever goes in to The Maltsters is going to find it hard to make money. First years costs are £80,000 plus then £34,000 plus per year in rent and that is for a 5 year tenancy. That means they have to make at least £50,000 a year just to get their initial  investment back and pay the rent. That's £1000 a week BEFORE you pay staff, buy stock or make a profit.

We'd like it but who wouldn't. Like most people we recognise that its gonna' be an uphill stuggle for whoever takes it. The pub business is on its knees and not just in Broadland.
One thing for sure tho'. It won't be open at Easter since the person at Punch responsible for any decisions is having a well deserved holiday until after the Easter period. Sorry to disappoint  Frown

quote "...person at Punch responsible for any decisions is having a well deserved holiday..."

Well deserved? Why's that? I take it you know them, and Punch? It would be very interesting to hear from somebody on the "other side" of this...

We have had quite a lot of interesting and recent debate on here about the pub trade, past & present, the impact of the no smoking laws, the difficulties of running a "seasonal" pub in Broadlsnd etc. Are you still in the business? on the Broads? Or is your interest in the Broads from a leisure point of view (your escape-like many of us!)We do also have quite a few local businesses on the forum and those members really open up the debates and help us see other angles that perhaps visitors don't consider.

So, welcome to the madhouse. Sorry for all the questions - I look forward to hearing more from you.

Karen

I agree with Mike and Steve - never go in the Ferry at Stokesby, we always visit Barry and Sylvia for their great food and friendly abuse Playful Wink  - wouldn't miss it - please let me know if they'll be open by May 8th

I heard at the weekend on a reliably informed grapevine that the Maltsters has been taken on by someone who already has 2 pubs and has just sold a hotel. It is intended to have it open for the Easter weekend. Same source was unable to give a name though.

Hi to all of our regular and loyal customers.  Yes we have been open since the 8th March and we look forward to seeing you all.  We are in the Broadcaster under the Cyle Hire and Broads Good Eating Guide we have not done a separate advert this year due to advertising expenditure.

Regards from Barry and Sylvia, Riverside Tea Room & Stores, Stokes behind the pub.

Would be great to see the Maltsters back open again - too many pubs on the broads are closing down.  I can't believe the costs in running the place though, it's exactly the same reason the Ferry in Horning is still shut.  It's criminal, we just hope it doesn't get turned into flats or something equally as bad.

Regards,
Sarah

Heard from Karen and Mike earlier today and they said that, unfortunately, there was no sign of life at The Maltsters so an Easter re-opening seems unlikely at the moment.

Sorry to be the bearer of less-than-positive information, folks...

John
