When I visit Horning I like to enjoy a pint at lunchtime in a riverside pub. The ample parking, large outdoor area and a large boat sales area makes that particular area an attractive location. My opinion might be a load of cobblers but it is my opinion and observation. From memory their seems to be quite a lot of mooring space available there so to reserve the area in front of the pub garden for small craft would be more than acceptible if indeed that is the wishes of the landlord. http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=19&Topic=15439&srow=308&erow=318 smellyloo@the-norfolk-broads.co.uk (smellyloo) Sun, 01 Aug 2010 08:06:41 GMT Pubs and Restaurants http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/replytotopic.cfm?Forum=19&Topic=15439 The 'magical waterland' discussion. Pauline, both guests, for that is what they are, have inevitably, although probably not intentionally, set themselves up as targets. That is the way of public life. One is chair of an influential forum, the other a consultant that has undertaken the thorny job of branding the Broads. Inevitably both will become targets, either of praise or of criticism. Both, I suspect, are perfectly capable of taking flak and answering it, and both are perfectly capable of ignoring or rising above that that they consider irrelevant to the debate. If either or both thought that they were in for an easy ride then I would accuse them of naivety, but I really don't think that that is the case. Both, until you pulled the plug, had stood up for themselves in a courteous and able manner. And now we have unanswered questions. The image that is portrayed of Broadland is of immense importance, it has to be just right. A very striking and recognizable logo has been presented, but is the motif the most obvious choice? Not an unreasonable question. It is Broads Tourism Forum members more than any others, BA included, who are insistent on the use of the National Park tag-line, their Chairman has put his head above the parapet, wonderful, and he has taken issue with the questions. Great, what open dialogue is all about, thank you Ian. So political debate is not what the forum is about, maybe, but it is part of life, and, in this case, it is about the image that is portrayed of Broadland OUR Broadland. It may be of no interest to many, but it effects us all. Back to the NP issue, it is, whether folk like it or not, all part and parcel of the issue. Sailing Sloth nailed it, absolutely bang on target. The Broads is not just another national park, it is The Broads. We all know the reality, the Broads is a member of that family, right and proper it is too. We all know that full membership is impossible without an overhaul of primary legislation, that is not going to happen. But we have an authority that appears to be unaware that the Broads is the Broads, and that their quest for NP membership should only be secondary to that. It is all about image, which started off as the whole crux of this debate. The question of NP status is all part and parcel of the image, can't be ignored. Pauline, I am not alone on this issue. I had some pretty strident e-mails this morning regarding the BA's behaviour at a recent event. One writer was seriously concerned at the level of underlying discontent in regard to the BA. Once again, it all boils down to image. Image is important, something that can withstand strident discussion rather than wooly debate. Simon Middleton has done his job, as a trained and qualified graphic designer I admire the new logo's simplicity and impact. It will become recognisable, once people learn what it is. But is the motif one that people would instantly associate with The Broads? Well, I don't think that it is, in fact I think that it is a poor choice. Only my opinion, but what is Simon's response? The same can't be said for some of the establishments up North. There are one or two that IMO can be a bit hit and miss, but I generally find the worst pub on the Southern Rivers is no worse than an average pub on the Northern ones. http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=19&Topic=21302&srow=1&erow=4 Pandora-3@the-norfolk-broads.co.uk (Pandora-3) Sun, 01 Aug 2010 06:46:44 GMT Pubs and Restaurants http://www.the-norfolk-broads.co.uk/replytotopic.cfm?Forum=19&Topic=21302 good food Also in Horning there is the New Inn and the recently re-opened Ferry, both have their own riverside moorings so you should manage, you need to ring and pre-book the New Inn mooring and table in advance and Gus will help you moor up and assist you into the pub if needed, very helpful chap he is. As said Bridge Inn at Acle is a must imho. Stokesby Ferry also has mooring right outside the pub, best to ring them and explain you limited walking abilities too. The Rising Sun at Coltishall, again moor right outside the pub, very popular though. Hotel Wroxham is even closer to the jetty a distance of all of 3 yards, Kings head at Wroxham again with own moorings. The Lion at Thurne could be a possibility if you take your boat as far down the dyke as the public moorings go, that would leave a walk of around 50 odd yds. Sutton Hotel again with chosen spot would be around 50 odd yards too. A quick glance through the B.C.U handbook (an excellent publication a bit like Hamilton's but covers the UK ) reveals river miles free from motorised craft outnumber river miles navigable by motorised craft by about ten to one. The 4.108 supplied to the Norfolk Broads hire fleets were normally set to a maximum of 3000rpm at the factory, however even injection pumps get changed over the years, so it could be set to anything! Also at Brooms they restricted the engines, sometimes on cable travel etc or at the pump?? Just for info the BMC1.5 was rated at about the same power as the 4.108,. Engine manuals can be misleading as the cover an engine 'range'. Perkins also produced hundreds of different 4.108's, these were supplied and then sometimes altered at the dealers around the country. Its very difficult to tell if your engine is down on power, but as its been mentioned all things like the fuel, or fuel filters, or air intake filter, or tappets, or a slight slipage in B/W clutch, or worn/incorrect propeller or even a bow heavy boat etc etc can cause the engine to work harder to produce the same output. There are loads of items that can be checked, but Im guessing your boat and engine are still in perfect order but just worn, unless its suddenly altered?? If you are calling past it should only take me 10mins to do the checks if required and im happy to do this without a charge as I enjoy this type of issue! The checks really need to be done with a calibrated rpm meter, as your VDO tacho could even be faulty!! Our exchange was private between the two families, no agencies involved and it was good. Our son and I made a short return visit to Poitiers which was exhausting, saying everything twice, first in French then in English for our son who was still learning the language at 13yo.
