  Anybody know of any additives for sealing a head gasket that is aquatic friendly e.g steal seal or kalimex

  I would be mindful about adding these gasket seal kits in a can, as depending on the cooling system you have you could end up making matters worse, especially if the system is fitted with a bowman type heat exchanger.

How bad is it? Is it 100% a gasket fault, oil in water or vice versa? Is it just a loss of coolant, which could be a number of things.

If you are mechanically minded even slightly, to change the head gasket takes around 3 hours depending on access in the engine bay. It all depends on what you find when you get it all apart...

I hope you get to the bottom of what’s causing the issue you have?

  Bar Seal was recommended and used by BMC/ Rover Cars for there twin overhead cam engines that use to weep water it can stay in the cooling system apparently,it doesn't clog up the water jacket. There is another called K Seal which works well this can also be left in the cooling system and isn't affected by antifreeze. if the combustion gases are leaking there is a sealant can't remember the name but is supplied by motor factors .John

  I’m using a 1.5 BMC and a small amount of milky coloured liquid as appeared on the inside of the cap on my header tank and I appear to hear a light hissing when underway a fully competent engineer from a reputable boatyard diagnosed the head gasket problem so obviously I’m looking round for alternative fixes,my son in law who has his own garage recommended one of your solutions K seal unfortunately we live the other end of the country and he has his own affairs so cannot attend,thanks for your suggestions any further help would be appreciated

  Best solution is surely to replace the head gasket rather than using bodging potions.
It's not that big a job and I doubt a gasket set is very dear for a 1500 bmc.

  Hi TC White foam/cream in rocker cover filler is not necessarily a head gasket its condensation in the engine, its caused by cheap low standard oil,Use Castrol inboard marine oil(this has a additive to prevent this) or thermostat not getting engine hot enough,engine breather pipe blocked, do you lose water/coolant? if not no head gasket leak, what i would suggest is try re torquing your head nuts first, before you think about taking head of they have a thick copper/asbestos gasket that can squash thinner easy to retighten head nuts then adjust tappets after woods.Hope this helps. Oh nothing wrong with the RIGHT additive in cooling system ALL motor manufacturer allow/suggest this. John

  Hi TC just to add water contamination in the sump will make your engine oil white/creamy, im sure your son has told you this,changing your thermostat will be the cheapest and easiest, and a 50/50 coolant will prevent corrosion in the engine.John

Maybe , with this is mind , it does require a head gasket replacement and condensation might not be the problem . Personally , if access is reasonable , I would replace the gasket , renew thermostat , change oil, filter and coolant , then the job is done properly. My opinion only

    Hi,the white foam/cream is not in the rocker cover,that looks clear it’s actually in/on the coolant header tank cap,I dont appear to be losing any coolant indeed if I top it up at all it would be approx 1 to 2 ozs i.e 50 ml and I always use 50/50 coolant,it’s just something that is pricking my mind so I’m looking for preventative recommendations and thanks all for your advice as well as other members.

  If you are getting oil in the water no sealant will work, try tightening head nuts or replace head gasket BUT get the head faced/skimmed if you do be for replacing, surprised you can hear hissing while engine is running is the hissing coming from the coolant cap? if so head is leaking gases from combustion chamber into water jacket in which case head gasket is leaking which means head off to check  gasket for leak stain/mark if not head is cracked and new head required.John
