  Can anyone help please?
  We have a VDO (Siemens) Oceanline tank gauge on our boat.I am trying to calibrate it. But no matter how the potentiometer on top of the sender unit is adjusted the needle will not move from the "empty" position at all, and certainly not to "full" when the tank is full and the power switched on.
  I am fairly sure that power is getting to the system because when switched on the needle deflects from it's rest to the "empty" position.

  hi steve, not too sure about boats, but when i used to find his fault on older cars they were often wired back to front!(pos wire to neg terminal and vice versa)

  Put a tester across the terminals and check that the resistance is changing when you move the float around, most European senders run between 10 and 180 ohms IIRC. if that all seems to be OK then get a 40 to 100 ohm resistor from Maplins and that should give a reading on the gauge if you connect it in a 12v circuit. That should at least identify if either component is faulty. Some VDO gauges are a little more complex, containing their own internal voltage stabiliser in order to prevent false or wildly fluctuating readings and these must be wired correctly unlike a simple resistive gauge which because on a boat they are operating on an isolated return circuit will work either way round, unlike a car which is ground return. Hope that helps. In the meantime I will have a look for a diagram of the more complex VDO gauge.
