Topic: Lord Paul and photo / video links

ncsl    -- Mar-15-2014 @ 5:24 AM
I thought I would start this thread as trying to keep photos and video that I have been doing on one thread.
These will be mainly links to other site I have or use.
Helps stop using up Richards Bandwidth / disc space.
So to start with some kingfisher
form this weeks trip with a friend.

Hi Bill, I think you mean the Nancy Oldfield pontoon?
That is the one that is normally moored on the right bank of Barton when you go towards Gays Staithe.

There's been some talk about Coltishal Lock on another thread.
There are two junctions as you get towards the end.
One takes you to the Horstead Mill - you donot require that route on the left.
The other is on the right.
You will see why you dont want the left route to the mill from this video.
The second half of the video is the end of navigation or the right hand route.

Paul, can I have a quick guess as to where you are moored?

Are you on the small northern arm that links the Ant to Barton Turf
ie your stern is facing Barton turf?

PS where did you get that extending camera pole from?
I assume it's an aerial mounting one.

best regards, Richard.
I can't wait to be back on the Broads.

ncsl    -- Mar-30-2014 @ 8:53 AM
Hi Rustic, Yep. That is Paddy's Lane, stern facing the boat yard at Coxes.
The Hi Level Pole mount I use on the Freeman is a modified ( I,m an engineer - dont hold it against me  lol ) TV pole from a caravan centre. three parts so gives me about 12 foot above the boat. The mount on the Kayak is a short version I made.  Just making a stablized mount for the kayak fitting, but that will just be a counter balance type.  Nothing special like the Drone or pole gyro ones.

It was the bark chippings that led me to that conclusion, and also the narrow width of the river at that point.

I like the way that the BA are now using luminous buttons each side of the mooring posts. I first noticed these at Sutton Staithe.
They really work well at night.

best regards, Richard.
I can't wait to be back on the Broads.

I sold my first Phantom- MKI - rather than upgrade it.
I bought the MK2 - NOT the VISION - as I wanted the stablised gimbal and the facility of being able to tilt the camera from horizontal to downward vertical.
Yes it has the new battery - and I have a spare - but boy dont they know how to charge - £109.00 for the spare.
Flying time with a hi powered video TX - 600mw @ 5.8 Ghz - gives me comfortably 15 to 20 minutes - normally 15 minutes is safe, depending how far out you are.  I dont normally fly too far from the take off point. Things may change now I have a better video down link. Smile

Hope that helps.

A question for "them that knows".

A lot of dykes and inlets say "Private".!

I was once told that on the Broads a boat can enter these dykes on the water but NOT land or moor.?

I understand that the water is tidal - like the Broads - so are part of the system and are navigable providing you are on the water.
A bit like the inner broad of St walsham and wroxham.

Any one is this correct please?

Dear Ncsi Is it possible to sail a moter cruiser up the Dilham canal when at Wayford bridge it looks very narrow but your film showed it to be a lot wider in fact there was a boat wet shed and through the bridge it looked very wide ie is it wide enough to turn a 44ft boat round, it looks OK on your excellent video's but of cause the camera can lie the first part looks wide enough to squeeze through but if unable to turn round it's a no no look forward to your reply i would hate to have to try to reverse all the way back.  John ps i do like your video's

ncsl    -- Jun-1-2014 @ 6:19 PM
That side of the canal is not suitable for powered craft as it is very weedy and shallow in most places.
Yes there is a boat shed there but empty and looks like it has been empty for many years.
A saily as you may have seen was going up there under a makeshift sail.
The best way is by row boat or canoe only.

Re Dilham canal arm, a few hundred yards on the right, after Wayford bridge.
Last week we had a look up there in a motor cruiser, however there is now a no entry sign nailed on a tree on the left, and wording... " No motorised craft" If I recall it was there last year too.
So what is this all about?
Clearly we observed the sign, and reversed back.
This sign does not appear to be a Broads Authority sign, as there is a Broads Authority sign at the entrance on the right bank. This BA sign although worn out, had no such exclusion. So is the no entry sign to motorised craft legal?

Years ago we cruised up there, through the bridge, and we were able to turn around, as it was getting rather shallow.
Clear water over a gravel bed if I recall.

best regards, Richard.
I can't wait to be back on the Broads.

It's great to see these aerial shots of Thorpe Island where I am moored.  I don't believe it has been filmed in this way for some years.

As for the bridge, up to 8 feet is regularly possible, anything less the 8 feet is even more regularly attainable.  Just occasionally there can be a series of high tides, so it's best to plan ahead as much as possible if you're over 7'6" or so.

I have a neighbour who had an air draft of 8'3" and he managed to get in and out quite regularly.

What are your rights regarding privacy when using these camera drones?

What if one hovers outside your bedroom or bathroom window?
Why don't the press use them to "Spy" on celebrities?
Perhaps they do...

What are your rights?

If I was Australian, I might use a boomerang to take one out.
If I was Dennis the Menace, then probably a catapult.
If Roy Rogers, or Buffalo Bill.... you get my message...
So if one of these guys takes one out, has there been any criminal damage or is it intrusion of privacy?
Would it get reported? Would there be a prosecution?

Personally I would transmit a frequency that would block the transmitter ie a jammer, which is probably illegal too  unless kept within the signal strengths and frequency band and let the drone take over.

Personally I think they are great when used as per those videos shown on this site, but there will be others who will abuse the privilege. More so now, following several programs on the TV.

Next they will have incendiary devices in the form of paper ballons with a flame, and let them go outside dry fields and chemical industries... doh... This is at a minimum, littering, so what steps are being taken here? Nothing...  Could be the start of a new rant!

These question have been asked many times -
"
What if one hovers outside your bedroom or bathroom window?
Why don't the press use them to "Spy" on celebrities?
Perhaps they do... "

If I wanted to spy through someones bedroom window I certainly would NOT spend £1000's on a noisy drone that is quiet obvious from a large distance .

I would buy a LADDER!

The use of drones can be miss used as can cars or boats, telephoto lens, CCTV etc.

If you are talking about privacy then you need not to look any farther then City streets and the use on CCTV - they are more intrusive than a noisy drone.

Just because I use a telephoto lens doesn't make me any more a peeping tom then you using a point and shoot camera, in fact I would say someone using a compact camera is more likely to be a peeping tom than me with a long lens as a compact camera or camera phone is very easy to conceal .

These questions will be asked many time over I'm sure.

I too like the videos that these drones can produce.
However I think that Rustic made a very valid point about privacy.

The subject of camera drones came up in discussion a couple of days ago. A farmer friend of mine said that anything mechanical that flies over his land other than normal aircraft at normal heights would not be flying for long. I do not doubt him either. He sees them as a totally unacceptable intrusion into his privacy.

What are the rules on this?

1. Are you simply allowed to fly them anywhere without restriction other than in no fly zones?

2. Can a land owner take one out with impunity.

3. There have already been a few near misses reported with aircraft despite no fly zones. Obviously the day that one brings a plane down would be the day that these are banned. But until (hopefully never) that happens are there any rules and regulations in place and are any tests or qualifications required before using one?

4. Can kids use them?

5. Are these going to be the latest weapon for sleazy journalists now that phone hacking has been sat on?

Not a topic that I had even considered until my recent discussion.....

  ECLIPSE WEEKEND

Well what a great weekend.! Thursday I cruised to Thurne and the Lion Inn and had a chat with Dorothy - the Bar Maid.
Then headed to St Benets Abbey with the intentions of mooring there over night for the eclipse. But due to the wind blowing me off the quay side I decided to go to Fleet Dyke for the night.
In the morning I did manage to get moored at St Benets OK. Met up with loads of friends, Palmtree, Newf, Teademon, and others, all doing the same thing - trying to spot the eclipse.

Well we did see it, after a while of waiting for the cloud to break. Had a quick flight around the Abbey too - bonus!

After the eclipse finished, the sky turned blue and cloudless.  Had a cruise to Ranworth Island, no one there !

Then off under Ludham Bridge and decided to moor at Mud Point for the night.
I had a few drinks - as one does - and sorted out some camera gear and video which I had taken in the  morning.  Early night only to wake up at 0200. Had a quick look out and the whole sky was like a diamond ring full of stars and no cloud.  Out side temp was 8C. So I couldnt let this go.  I got up and dressed and set up a star trail camera and managed to take this set of pictures. This is the combined picture after nearly an hour.

We have meet Paul, I was with Nick when you were here and I took several stills, most of which are on my laptop which is else where. I was the guy with the beard and a canon 450d.

You don't have to shoot him! Just give him some brandy
and he's your friend for life  Playful Wink

Islander    -- Oct-28-2015 @ 10:37 AM
Ohhh, I wouldn't shoot him, just because he takes better pics than me but I will make a note to add brandy to ships stores. I'd be happy with a decent cup of Earl Grey but Morgan's Spiced Rum really hits the mark.

Anyway here's my best attempt so far.

Had a very good day with friends and photographers on board Pandora on Sunday.  Not a lot of wildlife about but these pictures will show where the BA Rangers and Voluntaries have been doing some bank clearing.  This is looking good and should be nice to see once things start to regrow this spring.

The bridge - circled in red - is towards Wroxham.
So from wroxham, go over the bridge and Recruting Sargent is on right after the bridge.

When you look at the above picture, you should see the lock gate on the bottom right hand side of the picture. There is a tree line, follow that through to the bridge - gentle walk. Turn left over the bridge and about 200 yds is the Recruting Seargent.
Hope that helps ?

ncsl    -- Jul-31-2016 @ 4:55 PM
It has been a while since I was there so can not be too sure what it is like now.
There was good depth, albeit some weed when I was there last. As for space, the wherry's have been up there in the past.   You more than likely will have to turn by the ropes so a couple of good crew members would be advisable

Well the first attempts were not very good and I did not get back on. So I had another thought and did JUST manage to get on - and off - eventually with some "engineering" bits to help.
Anyway this will show you how I did it.

I was at the side dyke at Gayes Staithe.
A bit of blue green alga first thing in the morning but I was determined to have another go at getting back on, especially as the weather would be cooling off.

There was a serious side to it - wouldn't think so -  but I wanted to be sure that I could get back on - which I eventually did thanks to a lot of thought and a few bit of engineering on my part.

I am thinking of selling my DJI Inspire 1 DRONE and doing another upgrade.

Comes complete with ORIGINAL case AND InsPak - Unique Hardshell Backpack designed for DJI Inspire 1.
This case allows storage of the Inspire 1 with the camera fixed. So no camera removal required when packing away.

Single controller, THREE batteries, Propellers, Prop Clips, Charger, Camera filter, two.
Current firmware installed and updated (WM610_FW_V01.11.01.50 ).

I would prefer the buyer to pick up from me ( nr5 0hb Costessey )or I could bring it to you if within a few miles of the Broads, as the two cases will be difficult to pack and I do not like how carrier companies handle delicate equipment, also I can do a test flight with the buyer to show every thing working ok and, as due to this type of item, NO RETURNS will be offered.

There are a number of videos I have taken with this on my Youtube channel – or look at the links above.

The only thing you would need is a smart phone or tablet – I use an Android Tablet which is not being sold with it – and the free DJI GO app.

Stoped off for a flight today with the new Mavic Drone.

Just got back from the boat and some flights. A few small problems that do not show on this edited video. The Main one was the camera was out of focus - Guess I needed to tap on the screen to focus ??? Other than that very pleased with it. So here is the first couple of flight. https://youtu.be/ndUfGi8NmRs

Beck  Braydon and Mere.

ncsl    -- Oct-26-2017 @ 3:34 PM
Adi, This one has three types of mode - ref. speed.  It has a "tripod mode" which allows the max speed of 4 MPH or less.  Very stable, and the "avoidance" systems still work.
Then the top speed - without GPS lock and no avoidance is 40 Mph.  Then "normal" which I think is close to 20 MPH - depending on normal mode or autonomous mode - like the follow me and active tracking.
"Follow me" means it will follow the position of the transmitter .
Active tracking means it will follow say a person or boat and I will not have to move my position.
Very advanced now.

Thought folks might like to have a look at the Forum meetings over a few years ago.
The fun and games, people that have come and gone for one reason or another.

These were some of the best time IMHO for meeting new and old friends, enjoying great company, having a few drinks together and waking up to a wonderful new day - complete with hangover !
So hers are some videos from years past.
I will try and find up other still picture albums soon.
