Topic: NBF CinC 2012

fidear45    -- Jan-3-2012 @ 11:17 PM
  Thread duly started.

Please suggest any dates (not June) that take your fancy and I will see what comes up and talk with the boss. July seems favorite to me but that's just me.

This time we simply have to get Charlie and her dad along as well. Any hirers out there disappointed their holiday doesn't coincide with the site meet or QDJ events well this is your time my friends

Would folks like to have another go at Rafting? Or if you didn't make it last time, have a go this time round or quayside mooring? Let me know via the thread or a PM.

Last years barbe on the beach at Salhouse was a sell out so that may get suggested again!!

Lets be havin those ideas then mateys.

As June is (for many) the start of the summer holiday season, and September marks pretty much the end (for another many), how about a September meet and CinC.
Just a thought!
Perhaps another thought, What about having an event on the southern waters?

I believe the lyndsey nuptual cruise is in Sept too.

I think an event on the southern rivers would be a good idea.

Good ideas into the idea pot.

I like the idea of a southern meet.
Beccles would be a good one as you can book the
moorings and there are now lots of leccy posts
too, (may be needed at that time of year), and
fairly sheltered. A BarBee on the grass. Easy to
get to if you don't/can't get by boat, toilets
and showers. Sorted.

The Corsicans are up for all or any of it this year. South rivers sounds good, in July or August. Need to look at tides and will revert. Tell us what we need to do to make it work.  Smile

Boss returns from London Shopoping later. Thats when I confess to volunteering (thanks Griff)and will revert with some options.

Beccles is good however getting 30+ boats to process up the river requires planning of where and when they start..Not saying it cant work as Oulten, WRC and Loddon could be start off points quite easily.

OK I confess to being excited just thinking about it...

  Meet up at The Locks?

I'm all for a Southern meet, not just because I live here, but because it's interesting, beautiful and by and large, there is space. The only things we don't have is Hickling Broad or hundreds of orange topped mobile flat-afloats dispensing empty lager cans!

Well, our dates are also fixed, as mentioned by Maffman and it seems we are both on board (separate boats, lol) for the week commencing 12th August, so I have to vote for that of course.

A Southern cruise would make life so much easier, no need to try to arrange a remote handover and although I've never been on the boat during children's holidays before I imagine the South is much quieter. And it would be lovely to have Charlie and her dad along.

  Hey up Matt LOL
JM, The Locks would be great but I believe several
boats can't get there because of the bridge.
Besides, not enough room.
Also, can you imagine a flotilla coming down the Chet?  Playful
Somerleyton would be good as Hire boats could moor in
Leboats marina leaving extra room on the public
moorings for private boats until everyones
arrived/ready to depart on the final leg.

  hi all,
just something to consider , but does'nt the vintage wooden boat assocation hold variuos events during the year/ summer at various locations on the southern side ? beccles marina being the main 1 that sticks out , so may have to pick your dates or location  carfefully ,

steve and vicky

Charlie    -- Jan-6-2012 @ 6:08 PM
Wow I have to say the idea of a Southern C in C is handy.  Ranworth to Beccles in one afternoon was a long trip, especially going back the day after a heavy nights 'meeting'.   Also it worries me that people are sometimes discouraged from coming south, the area is already dying enough. As with all boating if you are sensible, careful and pay attention it really isn't difficult and has its own beauty.

I think marinas such as WRC, OB, Norwich  or Beccles are the fairest way to go.  I would hate to think of us all blocking up a 24hr mooring, plus the possibility that it could already be busy.  The Loddon meet years back was at Pye's mill which is not BA mooring but the basin at the bottom was still there for other holiday makers who wanted to be in Loddon.

Things to bear in mind;
1.  Seamaster club meet at Beccles - Clive (waterbuoy) should be able to help with this as I know he is a member.
2.  VWBA meet at Beccles - Griff should know about this one, its often around August Bank holiday and is sometimes the same date as Seamaster.
3.  Oulton Broad gets booked up in advance especially around the airshow week, but as Richard/Brandywine virtually live at the Yacht station he can maybe find out when they are quiet, if asked nicely.
4.  Geldeston - although beautiful; a) I'm not sure I want everyone to know just how lovely it is, b) bridge clearance in Beccles is fickle!
5.  Lastly my holiday dates  Playful Wink    (only joking) - Martin, Bless you for thinking of me.   I've Pm'd you.

Hope this helps.

BuffaloBill - Looks like we'll be following you then!

The VWBA meet is normally the weekend of 20th Aug, this year the weekends fall on 18th and 25th Aug so it will be one of those weekend for their annual national rally, and a lot of owners go to this event so the NBF if intending to visit Beccles will have to avoid the VWBA event. I've just checked the VWBA website but it needs updating and I have not got the latest 'Log' to hand.

Miles of riverbank at The Locks. Can always leave the top hampered boats at Beccles yacht station and cadge lifts off low boats. Agree that Somerleyton is an option but at a price, dear old pub! Reedham, Cantley and Beachamp Arms all have stacks of moorings.

Mentioned to the boss that I had volunteered for this and she left me alive and said "Oh ! I saw some of the conversations".... Pheeewwwwww..

OK LOOKS LIKE DOWN SOUTH IT IS THEN!!!!!!

so now the dates to work on avoiding the VWBA meeting and such..

NUMBERS WANTING TO PARTICIPATE COULD EFFECT WHERE WE GO MIND YOU.. If lots Beccles is a winner, if fewer then Pyes Mill could be up for it. If medium then Geldeston could be good (bridge height permitting)

At this point I should say that last year we took malanka through the old bridge twice, not at lowest tide, with the top UP!!! so it can be done..

Up she has Airdraft of 8'2"..

When we get an indication of how many we can finally decide where and if necessary make bookings with nice Farmers or the guys at the Beccles yacht station.

Will someone who knows how to more than me (Griff) set up the sign up bit on the events....pretty please!!!!!!!!!!

Can I just add that the dates etc are not mine to decide so they may end up being another time so as not to coincide with the VWBA meet or any other do.
Once everyone decides on a date then we will proceed from there, won't we Fiddy! His idea after all.
The only thing to consider is the 6 week school holidays if looking about this time of year. Everywhere will be heaving!
When I mentioned Somerleyton, it was'nt as an overnight stop but a meetup for anyone from the Yare joining in.
As I'm retired, it doesn't make much difference when the do is. The only limiting factor for us is the fact that Jenny is her mums carer and could possibly put a spanner in the works. A very small chance, but a chance non the less. Confused

At Last!! The days are now getting longer!
Just a few more weeks and it will be SPRING!!!!

  Ahoy mehearties!

Just a further option on the CIC proposed by a fellow forum member....

CinC cruise Waveney to Beccles on the morning/afternoon of Friday 24th of August!!!!

Options.......
All Northern Crews "muster" at Ferry pub in Stokesby on Thursday evening 23/08/12. Double mooring is allowed if required at the farm moorings, room for about 16 - 20 boats including pub moorings. Would need to get to pub early as I don't think they  reserve moorings.

CinC Set off from Stokesby for GY at 08.30 Friday. Anyone can join at Stokesby at 08.30 if they couldn't make Thursday night. [slack water GY is 10.07] to cruise to Beccles. approx 6 hours cruising time. Arrive Beccles mid afternoon Friday 24/08/12.

BBQ early evening and into the night for all NBF crews who want to on Friday night at Beccles,( "bring your own" style - not "NBF meet" style if you get the drift) This is a CinC not a meet as such.

Southern crews assemble Oulten Broad, WRC or anywhere else you fancy to meet the Northern boys from GY and on up the Waveney (Following Brandy Wine and the Forum Flag of course) Some more work required on this aspect but just setting the scene here folks!!

As this MAY (I have asked) be the VWBA meet weekend, proposal is that on Saturday Vintage boaters do Vintage boater type things. Those not interested in leaky wooden boats and newer boat officionado type guys head up to Geldstone for Saturday night fun and games at the locks. (loads of bankside mooring and a lot of fun in the games room)return Sunday AM squeek under the bridge to depart Beccles at 08.45 to catch low water at GY around 12.30 on Sunday.

Back up north by mid afternoon on Sunday for those who have to leave. Of course as the Monday is a Bank Holiday, some crews may want to go to Oulton or Loddon on Sunday and head back on Monday. Low water GY on Monday 27/08 is 13.55

Of course those who wish to could head down south earlier and watch the last powerboat races of the season (Are they still on then??) Before cruising up the river with a bunch of fellow loonies.

OK so now we have a firm proposal so lets have some opinion ... If this flies I will open the sign up page and off we go.

If you think it appropriate we could book 20 slots provisionally for the Friday night? But if 37 boats turn up we still have a problem. I wanted to get an idea of numbers but if folks dont want to commit to provisioanlly comming it doesnt help us.

I can definately book for those that have signed up so far as the yacht station will use the names to fill the book.

Do you think it appropriate to book say 25 slots under CinC NBF and go from there.. suggestions welcome...

Actually that did happen last year. There is always a fly-by on Oulton Broad when they do the dragon racing, this year is was an american light bomber, I forget what model it was.

Anyway, one weekend after the Lancaster from the memorial flight was due to appear at an event near here. They had some spare time and spent a good 15 mins flying over the Broad. A better view than when they do the air show in Lowestoft.

More of a plan made of desperation...

This years arrival will be quite problematical if you think about it everyone arriving within a few minutes in the marina.. should be time for the griff hailer..

I think we need to arrange some meet up points before we head up river. To catch the northern boys and girls and join them up with those of us already daaan saarrff..

Will post soon on meet up, collate points and cruising order ...lol (just joking!!!)

OK folks we have some progress to report.

The VWBA meeting is the weekend of the 18th and 19th of August so we should be clear for the Beccles trip.

Next steps.

When we have confirmation of available mooring we will.

Move to provide some further excitement on the Saturday for willing souls... Secret at the moment will keep you posted....

Attract a nice historic and relevant centre piece for the CinC on the Friday afternoon.... Secret at the moment will keep you posted....

Immediate actions involve trying to get to Beccles and speak to the Harbour master there about reserving moorings. If there are any volunteers for this please PM me and we can chat.

Richard is trying, Simon is trying and so are we (from Brussels)but the phone remains resolutely not answered and the office not open... We will keep at it ..

Next: SIGN UP AND ENJOY THE FUN..............

The Beccles HM doesnt start work until the 1st april so we may have to wait. If anyone knows of any back channels or has any contacts we could use to get our names in the mooring book please suggest away.

Meanwhile I believe we should go full throttle for the Friday and Saturday programs..(the secret squirrel stuff) all those in favour say aye... Passed ....Easy innit..

Right, have gone through the whole thread again.  Phew!

We shall be there (not certain where "there" will be yet) maybe Burgh Castle, maybe higher up and will join the cruising to Beccles, but might have to leave later for Brundall, or nearer Brundall, on the evening to permit us to get back to base in time for handover (Keith estimates four hours cruising and Somerleyton bridge time to check).

Or we might peel off after the cruise, take the boat back to Brundall and return by car...

Much to consider, but plenty of time.  Sorry Martin, I know this doesn;t help with mooring plans.

Just to let everyone know, we have provisionally booked (thanks Charlie) 14 mooring spots for the evening of the CinC in Beccles. Should more folks wish to join please sign up and we will advise beccles YS of the new numbers immediately.

We also now have some really big guns working on the centre piece for the CinC and hopefully an announcement can be made soon. You know who you are and you are a diamond mate. If you need some commitment from me pls PM.

I am very excited for the whole season, just floated for a week and it was glorious, if a little chilly in the polar flow. Only minor scuff damage at Womack (usual source) so all round a good week.

Malanka will have to leave Beccles on Saturday morning as we do not have the Monday as a BH here in Belgium. However if there are folks going back North on that day or some that didn't make it to Beccles that would be interested in a rafting party in South Walsham Broad on Saturday evening we will be there having a good time. Few cocktails, quiet music, sailing for the uninitiated (Mini Mal)and general larking about.  Let me know....

MTB 102 Leading the NBF C-in-C flying the NBF Standard.

Tell me you're not impressed?

MTB102 is crammed full of History, to name but two of her famous passengers - Eisenhower and Churchill.  She also took part in rescuing the troops from Dunkirk and brought more troops off the beach than any other vessel.

She is the flagship of the Dunkirk Little Ships association

She is of course attending the QDJ Thames Pageant and leading the historic section, (she will be in good company 'cos we are in that section with her)

Great Idea of M&F to invite her along to the C-in-C

Ok. Here is a draft plan for the CinC from the Bure down to Beccles.
It seems that Fidear (Martin) did a ‘Military Volunteer’ on me!
So the route/timings/thoughts  are as follows.
Slack water Yarmouth for the Friday morning of 24th August is 10:07.
I would like to arrive Yarmouth at 10:30 to make full use of the ebbing tide from the Bure and getting the full benefit of the flood tide over Breydon and up the Waveney so saving time and fuel in what will be a long voyage for many.
This will still give good clearance for the Yarmouth bridges, typically around 12’+, and the majority of other craft will already  have either passed through or moored at the YS, giving us a clearer run through.
With this in mind, here is the draft plan:-
I will be leaving Wroxham sometime just after midday on Thursday 23rd(Time to be decided).
Overnight at Stokesby Thursday night 23rd and casting off on Friday morning at 09:00, arriving Yarmouth 10:30.
(If the moorings fill up, then maybe the overspill could overnight at either Acle or even The Stracey Arms).
Arrive at Somerleyton around 12:45ish for the overnighters there and the Yare contingent (if any) to join.
Arrive WRC around 13:30ish and tag onto the back of MTB102 and Brandywine etc. and collecting any further craft into the flotilla.
Arriving Beccles around 15:45/16:00.
At this point it may be wise that all craft leave around a 5min gap between each vessel so giving the craft in front time to arrive, line up and moor, keeping in mind that there maybe other craft which are not in the flotilla arriving or departing at the same time. It will make things easier for the harbour master too.
Anyone with special needs should PM me, and we will assume that all craft will moor stern-on unless you let us know in advance.
If anyone has any comments or further ideas regarding this draft (and it is only a draft at this point!) please let us know and we can amend as necessary. There maybe some who will leave from Stalham /Potter/ Oulton Broad or Brundall for instance, or even leave their moorings on the Friday morning, and we can then co-ordinate those to meet up with the flotilla at various points on route.
The timings shown should allow for anyone who is not overnighting at Stokesby, Somerleyton or WRC etc. to join where it best suits them.
I will ask in the not too distant future for your prefered Start/Joining point so arrangements can be made.
Bill.

Edited because the times were right but the
days/dates were wrong  Blush

  Morning BB,

That plan is fine with me Smile

We will be crewing up 'B.A' late Thursday evening, I then intend to do one of two plans (As if my plans ever go smoothly)

Plan A:- Thursday 23rd Aug - Night Nav from Stalham to Stokesby or as far as I can manage weather / nerves dependant (This is also my B'day btw)

Plan B:- Friday 24th Aug -  - V.early morning departure from Stalham eta at Stokesby before 0900

Once we arrive at Stokesby we will then be under your instructions from there-on through to the WRC, where I suspect Malanka will assume Guardship duties as the OIC.

Transiting behind MTB102 - With the Waveney being wide enough as it is, and assuming we have plenty of boats in the flotilla there is the opportunity for boats to form two tight columns behind MTB102 between WRC and Beccles, spreading out on arrival at Beccles for berthing evolutions.  This is of course just a suggestion I'm throwing into the hat for M&F to mull over

Whatever is decided is fine with us.  I've just got to finalise my crew, at present we have myself, Breamlayer, our two Ladies and Macie Dog so will no doubt will bring 2 or 3 x more

  Dear All,

Griff is of course as usual completely correct. We (Malanka)will be with MTB102 from her arrival on the system and hopefully making sure we all arrive at the WRC together.
I think that as MTB102 is to be the star of the show and we all want to have an opportunity to see her from the water then two columns of two abreast would be a very sound platform.
The river at Beccles is plenty wide enough to permit decent separation for mooring evolutions.

I do however have one suggestion that someone with a griff hailer moors pretty early on and helps the yacht station guys and the Malanka crew direct the boats to mooring berths. Malankas crew will be on hand to help with ropes and so on. I don't think the YS guys will look forward to trying to help all 20 or so of us moor in 4 or 5 minutes without some help from us.

We are well in hand with such preparation at this early stage so I think staying flexible now and firming up definite plans later is a good plan.

Charlie please will you take control of the mooring reservations and flirt and flutter with the YS guys on our behalf and increase the number of reserved berths to 20 please. Plus MTB102 of course.
If we get many more than this to sign up then we will fill most of the basin. We are currently at 12 and only 11 will require a berth as you are over the river at your home berth. So let's see what the next few weeks bring and stay flexible.

She likes a challenge. I am assuming that will be most if not all the available space in the basin. Striking early we just might get it. If not then at least we will know how many we can accommodate.
It is the Friday before the bank holiday of course, hopefully most of the northern based hire boats will be safely back up the Bure by then.

Griff, my darling, piece of cake!

I've just had a lovely chat with a nice man from Beccles yacht station called Mike who is in charge of bookings.

We have 20 boats PLUS MTB102 booked in for the Friday.  The MTB will go on the river frontage opposite Derby's Quay.

Mike does need to know in advance how many stern/side ons are required - so if those who are going to be there can let me know, I will pass on the message.  There is also facilities for people to have electricky too if they want it and I'll need to know that as well.

The Yacht Station have the forum web address and thread details so may be dropping by to read through the planning stages.

Martin - they now have my phone number as contact and I'm happy to take on that side of the organisation, which will include tin rattling to collect the mooring fees on the day (PM on way shortly to you about this) I also have his mob number to update him whenever necessary.

They would like to alert the local press too - if that is ok with you & the MTB people?   (and of course Richard, as our admiral)

Phew - job done! (for now anyway and I didn't even need to resort to the skirt!)

  A bit of useless info.
There use to be a guy who ran a motorcycle business in Norwich - Geoff Priest -funny guy , if he didnt like you then he wouldn't sell you anything.
His show room was next to Fie bridge and always an E-type Jag in the show room.

He had skippered the MTB at some time!

  Hi Simon

I have a CinC related request. Will you initiate a discussion with Bill with regard to organising both the Northern and Southern aspects of the meet up at pre-selected rendevous points?
We may have more boats than Stokesby/ WRC / St Olaves etc can cope with so we may have to have multiple locations. I think it appropriate that we find some way to communicate via PMR or something similar on the day too so I will have a look see what we already have.

Hi all. We've just got back from a week 'down sarf'
(2hrs ago!) so I will be doing a new document to
allow a more accurate timetable for various meetup
points.

Could I ask for the air draft of all craft attending
from the north broads with any canopy closed by PM
please, so I can better plan the Yarmouth bridge
passage.(In case of rain) When I went through last
Sunday 1.5hrs after low water, the bridge was
showing 8' 3" which gives me 3" of clearance with
the trimast up. If we have issues with higher air
drafts, then this will have to be ammended as neccessary.
Incidently, after rounding the yellow post, the
flooding tide gave me a push of around 4mph and
with the engine at a fast idle, we crossed Breydon
in 45mins. We can go earlier, no problem, but won't
get the same push up the Waveney.
If anyone can see any problems/issues etc. please PM
me and we will get it sorted.
Thanks

Just a few days to go and
the nights start drawing
in again!!

BroadAmbition    -- Jun-8-2012 @ 2:06 PM

We would be coming from Brundall, but assuming we make it to Norfolk on te Thursday night, we should be able to meet you somewhere on Breydon.

Chris

fidear45    -- Jun-21-2012 @ 9:52 AM
Never too late and great to have you along. Princess Zena will be able to meet up with her sisters.

We will be in Oulten on Thursday night but some other guys will be crossing Breydon to meet up at St Olaves to rendevous (sounds better than meet up)prior to heading up the Waveney (points , boats and times yet to be arranged) so from Brundle shouldn't be a problem.

For everyone else that might think you are too late... YOU'RE NOT....

Plenty of space still available at Beccles just sign up in the forum events and let Charlie know if you want leccy etc.

What's occurring with the NBF C-in-C then?

By my reckoning at present we only have 14 x boats attending and not ONE hire craft  Confused

I would have thought that this would be an ideal opportunity for those that haven't crossed Breydon before to give it a go as there will be many of us doing it together.  Also as this years C-in-C is 'Down Sarf' again an opportunity for those that can't normally get north.

AND of course MTB102 will be the flagship and cruising with us.  It is very rare to see this historic vessel close up let alone cruising the Broads

Last years C-in-C we managed around 50 odd boats and everyone had a marvellous time, surely we can do better than just 14?

So if you are a hirer or privateer it matters not. Rag-n-stick or even Bathtub all welcome

1) Rag and stick = tick
2) Never been south = tick
3) Chance to cruise with MTB102 = tick
4) Chance to be bossed around by Miss  Tinhat tick

Clearance required under the bridge 29ft. (or with stick folded 6ft 2" )

Side on mooring prefered.

Ok folks. As promised herewith the CinC rendezvous
document for you to print off and keep on the boat.
I have taken on board (pun intended) the PM’s sent
regarding air draft heights (in case of rain) with
regard to passage through GY and Somerleyton
Bridges. So far I’ve had 6 replies and the highest
is 8’ 6” and so the passage times should cater for
everyone. If anyone can see any issues or problems
with it, please let me know as soon as possible.
It may be wise to leave printing off the document
until nearer the time in case of any changes.
Your views on it would be welcome.

I was at OBYS last week and saw MTB102 in the shed at the training school and the man there assured me that the boat WILL be ready for the CinC cruise in august,i took some photo's of it out of the water and they were doing some repairs to the hull and the props were away being worked on so should be good for the day.
I also spoke to Mike the ranger at Beccles and he said he was dissapointed that someone had booked for the friday AND saturday of the bank holiday weekend, then changed there minds and made it only friday. He had turned down loads of boats from booking.

Sorry to say we have changed our plans . The stress of getting moored at Stokesby when most of you will be there way before us and possibly having to go off to Stracey Arms on our own does not feel like it will be enjoyable.
Also , having been down south last week , the cruise down to Beccles from Stokesby all in one day is just too long in one day for our relaxed style of holiday.
I hope you all enjoy it .We will be on the Ant I think!

Issues regarding the moorings were resolved weeks ago. Mike had initially got the wrong end of the stick and we were booked in for both fri and sat. However, this was sorted. Undoubtedly he will have been able to contact many of the potential bookees as BYS have several weekend regulars  (judging by what I've seen).

I have only made bookings for FRIDAY night anyone wishing to stay on for the Saturday will need to sort themselves out. I don't have their phone number to hand at the mo, will post it tomorrow.

Ah Ha!

Gotcha!

IF you can remember the Sunday morning after the NBF meet (Which I doubt  Playful Wink  ) I originally put the mast, guide ropes, pegs, guide ropes with bunting, NBF Standard all onboard Brandywine. YOU instructed me to put them onboard another boat to go of to Whispering Reeds which I did as ordered!

And besides I can't get down to the Broads between now and the C-in-C weekend, and by the time I do arrive it will be way too late.

Therefore we need a 'Someone' to collect the standard, short dressing lines, base plate, top section, insert and standard from Whispering Reeds, take them to RB and trial them.  A 324 mile round trip plus a trip down to OB and back for me to do it is a bit beyond the call of duty I would offer  Scared

A 300+ miles round trip is not on to pick up and deliver some kit.
I'm away - in what someone I know calls "Gods Country" - next week.

There are several crews on the CinC not working, or on holiday, that I'm sure someone in East Anglia could step up and help????

Hello Charlie, Yes Moonlight Shadow is booked in at OBYS, have been for ages.

We have to be away from Beccles at the crack of sparrows on Saturday morning, 0700 at the very latest, so if possible and to cause the minimum of inconvenience to other boaters when we start up and start manoeuvre out of Beccles YS would it be possible to moor quite near to the river?

Griff I would love to be on MTB102 from OB to Beccles on Friday, the problem being I would need someone to volunteer to helm Moonlight Shadow.  I don't think I am fit enough to volunteer as a crew member, depending what's required of course, but haul away, heave away is beyond me now. Wink

Kieth - There will be plenty of skippers around so something may be able to be worked out.  We have two  maybe three skippers due to be onboard 'B.A'

Anyroadup the decision on the 16 x crew places onboard MTB102 is nowt to do wi me.  That is Simons/Martins remit.  All I am doing regards the organisation of the C-in-C is precisely . . . .Nowt!

Apart from doing as I'm told when given order from Simon/Martin, so far I've accomplished every instruction I have been given.  They might yet give me something to get my teeth into!

Oh and BTW Simon/Martin, have you got the order of rafting up alongside MTB102 on OB sorted out yet with regards to size/length/weight/height/fenders/mudweights/direction/wind?  No?  -  BUFFS   Evil Grin  (Ask Simon - he now knows what it means)

I do have a flotilla formation worked out for the part from Oulton Broad
to Beccles and will hopefully post this tomorrow from my office PC. I
would expect one of the ships already on OB to take charge of the rafting
up alongside MTB so that they can direct the arrival of the northern
flotilla to port or starboard as the northern ships arrive. I'm sure Martin
will cover this when he gets back from holiday in the USA.

  Simon,

While Martin is getting a tan in Florida, and I've been a bit lax in my tasks while working on some minor forum issues I'll update with what I know.

The HM's at Oulton can (somehow!) make room for everyone to moor up for a short period of time, I'm not sure how practical that would be.

For the rafting I would suggest using the main channel, drawing a line going from the YS towards dead end. Paul could then take photos from the wherry/lock area.

I need to talk to the skipper of the tour boat as we would be in his way.

Also on the way out there will be a big bunch of rag and stick folks on the main broad, nd we should probably try and co-ordinate with them to ensure a safe passage.

Hopefully most skippers will have PMR so we can keep in touch. Paul is yours working now ? Smile

Mirage    -- Aug-10-2012 @ 9:59 AM

Attached is the flotilla list for the CINC from Oulton to Beccles.

May I request that all skippers familiarise themselves with which row of the flotilla they are in and which ships they will be falling in behind to ensure a clean and orderly departure from Oulton behind MTB 102

I'm out on the river now, so hope to see some members over the weekend. If anyone has any questions please send a PM.

Just got home from my hols (Don't panic the withdrawal won't kick in til Monday and I'm going back on Tuesday  Evil Grin   )

Had a chat with Mike at Beccles and Paul at Oulton Broad they both seem to be looking forward to it.
The plan at Beccles is for the MTB and those who have requested side on to go along the river frontage opposite Derby's Quay, everyone else stern on inside the YS.  His lordship has requested an end spot for photography purposes but I'm guessing he will scoot ahead and take that in order to get piccies of the mooring madness.  Lisa - maybe you can speak nicely to Martin and he could leave you a space between Malanka and Mistral.  I'm sure the Malankans won't mind being woken at 7am!  Playful

I will not be about to actually sort mooring order as I am almost (literally) tail end Charlie.  Its not that I've offended Simon in any way but our engine seems to feeling the heat a little and we are limited to about 5mph.  So I won't be arriving until some time after those of you at the front.  I'll sort my tin rattling when I can.

My second attempt at upside down reading told me that OBYS diary has 'NO MORE BOOKINGS' written in it for the Thursday night.

Oh and I let Mike know that the MTB was staying for the Saturday night.

Not CinC related but beware anyone in the Beccles area next weekend as it the Vintage Wooden boat meet, the Seamaster meet and the Beccles carnival - the place will be packed to the rafters!

I think that's everything - Simon, have I forgotten anything?

  Regarding the photo shot .

I hope to take video and still pictures of, the start of the flotilla as it progresses, and a circuit around the flotilla.

Once that is done I will start to move out of the Broad slowly to get a full width picture of you all.
Then once that is done and the cruise starts, all boats will pass me on my port and stb side as per Simons list, - which you all would have printed off, -  whilst I am filming.
Note to all skippers - I am a small boat and would like to stay in one piece please !

As the last boats pass me I will take up position at the stern.
On the way towards Beccles, I would like to make my way towards the front so I can arrive ahead of MTB102 and take some footage of the arrival and mooring at Beccles YS.

So if you see me passing you, it is because I need to get in front and NOT racing for the best mooring spot.

BTW. "
Hopefully most skippers will have PMR so we can keep in touch. Paul is yours working now ? "   YES! I think !

All the above may change due to any river movement with other craft.

Charlie, I believe Martin must leave even earlier than us!  We shall have to leave it a bit to get comfortably under the bridge to allow for the possibility of rain - we don't want to return MS wet, it would never do and we would surely (and understandably) be personae non grata for some considerable time!

On the plus side, I've spoken with the folks coming on board next and they are ok with us returning to base a bit late.

The plan is to just get up and go - I'll be packing and cleaning on the way back.

  Dear All

WE ARE BACK NOW!!!! I will call Simon tonight and see whats what and get up to speed.

In the light of recent posts concerning the pace of the CinC I do not intend that we speed up the Waveney at anything like 6 mph. I would hope that we can maintain steerage at considerably slower speed that that.
I will be dropping into the WRC early next week to tell them of our final times etc and let them know what's up on the 24th.

As for getting up early on Saturday for the GY bridge thingy. We will be leaving early and of course running our engine for the required twenty minutes prior to departure. OK sarc off.....
If we get up early enough and leave then we can do the GY thing with top up (req 8 ft). If not then we will do it with top down (req 7 ft) either way we will not have an issue with punching the flow, water punp not withstanding....the big lump in Malanka is easily capable of achieving almost the maximum displacement speed (where possible that is)
Anyone wishing to accompany us is more than welcome to tag along and have some fun with us on the way back.

  Dear All,

Does anyone have an objection to 4mph up the Waveney, its not like there is a rush to get there is it?

Target 4mph and that should allow everyone to keep together I hope. It also allows ncsl Photoboat to pass us reasonably quickly and still stay within the limits.

Does anyone require to have Griffs rafting explanation from last year given again? The whole thing went so well I don't have too much concern for it this time..Famous last words perhaps..

We will be alongside MTB102 already when you lot arrive so my big voice and some PMR chat should sort us all out. I will be the loon standing either on MTB or our own coach house roof yelling and pointing, arrive in orderly fashion and do as directed and everything will be sweet. Just like last year.

Remember that whatever orientation MTB102 is in approach from the stern and take it steady, if you make a boo boo go around again and don't worry about it.

Just to add that the rafting evolution (as Griff calls it) from last year was absolutely superb. Everyone did a really fantastic job and it went off sans hitch....Griff hailer helped...
From last years experience I would say that the cross lines from Boat to boat (stern and bow) were the crucial part, that and stopping accurately next to the previously positioned craft. The alternate stern and bow mudweights didn't seem to cause any disruption at all.

Thanks for the link miss I am sure it will help reduce any anxiety.

I for one am really looking forward to the whole day. Note to self... STAY POSITIVE......

There are a couple of holes in the list and we may yet get some late

That's me got my crew list sorted out at last.

Four of us for the weekend, Myself, MrsG, BreamSlayer, MrsW and Macie Dog of course.

BreamSlayer will be skippering 'B.A' from OB to Beccles on the Friday without me looking over his shoulder (About time too) as I'm needed elsewhere during that leg of the cruise.

Right with a little crash course from Simon I think I've managed to change my list into a PDF.

There are gaps if its info I don't know and if you have a ? for electrickery it means you said it would be nice but not necessary.

I can't gaurantee its all accurate as I have lost PMs the same as everyone else so please let me know if anyone needs info changing.

Current plan is for MTB 102 to go side on, on the river front with the 3 other side ons IN FRONT of her, closer to the old bridge.
Martin/Simon or anyone really - can you let Mr MTB know this as I don't have a contact for him.  (If it helps she will be opposite a Broom called Moby Dick which moors outside my yard)

All other stern on inside the YS.

It makes sense to me but is it making sense to everyone else?

Note to self - Avoid Martin next time he gets his delegating hat on!  Wink

Only 3 ships down for the DTS on Saturday Question

Beccles to Geldeston some of the prettiest parts of the southern rivers. Hope that more can join in the fun. If your ship is too tall to get under the old bridge then there are some spaces for passengers on some of the boats already going.

Griff is organising this part, so I defer to him on times of departure from and return to Beccles on the Saturday. Tinhat

Oh yes?  wot's with Griff is organising the DTS thing then?  News to me that one!

It should organise itself, all we need is a departure time from Beccles to cruise to Geldestone Locks Inn. Then after a suitable watering time a cruise back to Beccles.

There is room onboard 'B.A' for any forumite that wants to join us and doesn't want to or can't get their boat under the old road bridge.

Doug - as you may be aware the stretch of river from Beccles to Geldestone has some large overhanging trees and you might struggle with your impressive stick thing (Similar to the Wroxham to Coltishall section).  That's not to say it is do-able though, it's been a while since I've done that section so not sure from memory how easy/hard it will be for you.  If you decide against taking your PF, you are welcome onboard 'B.A'

If the mast has to come down for Beccles bridges, keep it down? Don't think there will be much sailing but I don't think the trees are an issue?

Anyway before I forget have a great C in C, I will be on the boat late Friday evening but rushing off to Barton Regatta. If White boats are racing chances are I wont be on board.........just don't moor up the side you reckon the white boat will want to come in on!

It's been all of 24hrs since I last did it and have to say that the weed caused me a lot of problems. The water was as low as it goes but I was going against a little tide. I could feel the weed building up underneath and round the keel cooler. It took a few bursts astern every so often to clear it. You should have seen the chopped salad that came out the back!

It terms of having a stick, it's not something I can relate to. There are lots of trees which virtually join overhead in places but it opens right out just after the split with the section which goes up to geldeston village.

The water is very clear in places at the mo, especially the further away from Beccles you get so keep an eye out for the fish. It's a very pretty area, very green and quiet. I would recommend but I'd rather keep it to myself.  Wink

Is there going to be enough room for us lots just turning up there? Or do you know of alternative mooring spots nearby?

there were only 2 of us there but later that night a procession of canoes, dinghies and other homemade boats turned up for a session.

I would be surprised if a number of us turned up in our boats at the Locks Inn that we would all get moored up,as sunday lunchtime usually is very busy especially at this time of year unless you get there earlier.
They normally have a couple of music groups playing all day and they have on the sunday as well.

I think they are going on a Saturday.....

I also think that should the moorings be full you can moor on the grass bank opposite and walk over the footbridge. If some of the BA moorings are free you could double moor with some co-ordination and agreement from any key already moored up. Obviously you will all need to leave at the same time though!

It was busy last Friday, but boats were coming and going all day right
up about 9.30pm. It seems many people just pop down for a drink
then disappear again. The really surprising thing was the number of
canoes etc, I lost count at 14! (not all at once I hasten to add).

In response to Ray's question about food. I know they normally do
but Simon did say that they have a wedding on so it's possible the
kitchen may be busy with that.

At least I think he said the wedding was Saturday but maybe it was
Friday. Might be worth a call if you are planning to eat there.

Just catching up after a couple of busy days...

I envy you your trip to Geldeston and would echo the comments about the number of moorings.

Griff has mentioned that his super-powers are needed elsewhere on the Cruise in Company on Friday - that unbelievably kind gentleman has offered to forego all the admiring glances at Broad Ambition in order to relieve me of what, frankly, was a huge weight on my mind.  He will be helming Moonlight Shadow!  No matter how much practice Martin/Fidear can give me, I would never have been up to that mark on Friday with 50 pairs of eyes on me.  I might add that Keith is rather relieved too!

And thank you Breamslayer for helming B.A to make this possible!

Lisa / Keith - You're welcome, glad to be of assistance, Couldn't have B'day boy missing an opportunity of this magnitude could we now?  Besides, believe it or not I'm kinda used to have admiring glances and photo's taken (So is 'B.A' as it happens tounge-in-cheek ) so it will be kinda novel for me to be anonymous for a change.

Anyroadup he's a jammy git, seeing as 'B.A' will be at the front of the flotilla with Malanka behind MTB102, all he's gotta do is follow Malanka into the basin, there will be loadsaroom at that stage so the only boat he can bounce of is of course Malanka!  No pressure there then Steve, only the whole of the flotilla watching you as we follow you in!   I am hoping to go up to the boat tomorrow for a couple of days solo cruising before thursday, so far so good.
Having just printed everything I can find on the CinC I am worried that I haven't got the latest version of everything?
the rendezvous sheet I've got shows the journey from Stalham/Wroxham down to Stokesby on the ebb, I thought it was flood?
can anyone help as to where I am going wrong.

Mirage    -- Aug-19-2012 @ 8:39 PM
  Hi Martin.

From Leaving Stalham, the tide will be going out all the way till we reach Stokesby. That means we will have a nice easy ride with the tide under us. It will be much less work for our engines.

When we leave Stokesby on Friday morning we will also have the tide working with us to GY. When we get to GY it will be slack water and once we get on to Breydon the tide will start to come in and push us all the way up to Oulton again saving fuel and making for a quicker & quieter run for everyone.

BTW there will be a stop off for 15 minutes at Somerleyton for any four legged crew members to have a comfort break and let off some steam  Smile

Looking forward to it, only 4 days left for anyone to sign up. Just PM me if you want to come along.

There are still a few places left for a ride on MTB102, on Friday to Beccles or Sunday from Beccles o Oulton Broad.

Cheers

  Hi Simon,
I don't know what I'm doing wrong but can't get my head around this, if as I believe low water at Ludham bridge is 11.19 high water would be just after 16.30.
Leaving Stalham at 11.50 would give you a flood tide all the way?  unless as is probable I'm doing something wrong.

Ok so the lure of the south has changed our plans again! We will be heading south on Friday morning but turning right to Norwich way . So we should be at Stokesby on Thursday night and joining the big rush across Breydon when the drawbridge opens!

Cruising in company to OB on the Friday from various locations - See flotilla Commanders.

Rafting up on the Friday at OB on MTB102.

There is a published list of the order of cruising from OB to Beccles. This has been done to 'Look Proper' for photo's and onlookers with regards to type/size of boats participating etc

To aid all of us getting in order in the right place for the cruise on leaving OB it would be helpful if we can get in some sort of order when we raft up on MTB102. With around 20 odd craft craft this should be easily manageable.  If arriving in a large group (Northern Flotilla) try to get yourselves in the right order prior to arriving at OB

Therefore

Stbd of MTB102 in the following order:-
Broad Ambition, Eaglet, Tradition, Dungraftin, Mercator, Brandywine, Totyme, Serendipity, Fair Sovereign2, Blue Dolphin

Port of MTB102 in the following order:-
Malanka, Little Sprite, Crosica, Cheshire Cat, Sunbird, Princess Zena, Dawn Princess, Pearl Anchor, Moonlight Shadow, Ferzan, Perfect Lady 9.

The above order is not cast in stone, it will just aid us all on slipping from OB and forming up for the C-in-C proper from OB to Beccles

The above list may change as last minute joiners and those cancelling alter it.

If you miss your slot on rafting don't panic, just go round again, and join the raft on the correct side (Port or Stbd as instructed) on the next available slot.

Please see the link for rafting up procedures  -  Here  -  mudweights and the like as produced by Griff Last year.  I may well bowwow Griff's ICS - Inter-Ship-Communication system (Loud Hailer) to aid skippers into their relevant place

Doug, we have taken White Moth up to The Locks, as well as Spray, you won't have a problem, even with a ten foot overhand. In the past we have moored several boats bow on so they are on the diagonal from the bank, as well as doubling up, packed plenty in there, just needs a bit of organising! A bossy woman to organise boats already moored there is a great assett.

Without having to trawl through page after page, could we please have a complete simpleton's timetable for the Oulton  departure as I shall be crewing forum member GreenOne on RCC 152 and will have a bit of juggling to do!

I'm not sure if the location for the rafting has been sorted. Dont forget the tour boat will be going in and out up the fairway. Also with the racing going on the channel to get past is narrow until past the yacht club. The harbour master mentioned that he doesnt mind if we use one of his vacant buoys if need be.

Mirage    -- Aug-20-2012 @ 4:30 PM
  Martin

You are NOT going crazy Wink

I hold my hands up and can only say that I used information for the activities on Thursday that had been gathered by a fellow forumite and it turned out to be incorrect. We will be going against the incoming tide on the run down to Stokesby on Thursday morning.

Please be assured I have double checked my own times for the cruise itself and they are correct. We will need to leave Stokesby by just after 8.00 on Friday morning to be comfortable with slack at GY.

From conversations I've had today with several skippers, it turns out most of the CINC folks from the North are already out on the river by the time we get to Thursday (lucky them!), so the concept of an actual CinC down the Bure to Stokesby has really gone out of the window LOL

My recommendation now is that everyone from the North musters at Stokesby on either Thursday afternoon / evening, or by 08.00 Friday morning ready for departure from Stokesby 08.15.

If possible please have your ships dressed from departure.

Looking forward to seeing everyone

Cheers

  Right Then

Attention all CinC skippers.

Attached is my final list of CinC ers and their departure / mustering points. Doesn't mean the event is closed, we would welcome some more people to join in, just post here or send me a PM.

Looks like there will be 11 boats arriving Oulton from the North. Mercator is only going as far as Stokesby due to air draft & tides at GY.

Please see attached list.

On Thursday night there looks to be 6 or maybe 7 boats stopping at Stokesby. Should be a fun night for us all.

To those arriving Friday morning, please do your very best to arrive at Stokesby by 08.00. We will leave at 08.15 whatever. We will not be rushing to GY, probably only 4-5 mph max. So if you are a little bit late you should be able to catch us up.

Crossing Breydon there will no doubt be some of the more experienced crews who will want to push on and give their engines a BLAST Evil Grin   That's fine, but please rejoin the flotilla at the far end of Breydon and be kind with your wash to the less experienced skippers or slower ships who will remain with Corsica during the crossing.

When we reach Somerleyton we will stop for 15 minutes to allow 4 legged crew members a chance to have a comfort break. As we leave Somerleyton please can we get into the following formation in single file so that when we get to OB we are something like ready to raft up straight away with MTB 102. NOTE S or P refers to your designated side of MTB when rafted up.

1. Broad Ambition   S
2. Little Sprite    P
3. Tradition        S
4. Corsica          P
5. Cheshire Cat     P
6. Sunbird          P
7. Dawn Princess    P
8. Serendipity      S
9. Pearl Anchor     P
10. Ferzan          P
11. Perfect Lady 9  P

I will post the update running list for the flotilla From Oulton to Beccles in a few minutes

Looking forward to seeing everyone and a good time

So I'm in the centre of the flotilla on my own. Was it something I said? Or do Sunbird's toilets stink that badly? Evil Grin .

On the plus side, does this give me permission to run Lord Paul down, as he's planning to position himself centrally to film us passing both sides of him? Evil Grin  Wink .

Thank you very much for organising this years C-in-C.
From the timings, order of the flotillas, tides, bridges, mooring and berths, crew allocations etc etc.
Very good of you all and it is very much appreciated from this quarter.  You even seem to have got a handle on the weather forecast between you as day by day it seems to be moderating in readiness for the weekend.

Looking forward to seeing all of us afloat from the Thursday night onwards, bring it on. Cheers

Doug.

BroadAmbition    -- Aug-22-2012 @ 12:21 PM

Doug - you will have no problems on Breydon drawing 3 x ft - Assuming you stay within the marked channel of course  Evil Grin   There are plenty of gin palaces that draw more than 3 x ft and regular ply up and down Breydon.

The dodgy area for you (And the rest of us come to that) is on the inner bends of the lower bure and the run into Yarmouth on the Port bank, as long as you keep a healthy respectful distance for the banks, you (and us) will be fine

We were down at Asda Gt. Yarmouth doing the shopping

These give you an Idea of what its like, both high and

I'm late leaving for Norfolk, there was a delay at the tyre fitting place and a problem with Tigers chain - now sorte.  I should be away by around 1330 now.  Once departed I can no longer view/post on the NBF of course.

MTB102 - Right, ref those shafts/props/launching etc.  Just rang RB and conversed.  He is expecting to take delivery of the shafts/props anytime now.  Fitting is straight forward and he has man power standing by to assist.

He has visited the OB HM the lock is booked, Tolls sorted.  Richard has been with the NBF Standard and RB is happy he can fly it onboard.

Now then if the shafts arrive late and delays things he might not make our 1400 deadline tomorrow.  I informed him this is not a problem we can hang around and assist if required, before 1400 tomorrow however I will know more.

Crew/Px's you carry on as previously instructed with regards to times etc.  When you get to the yard in the morning if owt has changed then try to let the rest of us know.

However I will contact RB again this evening to find out the state of play, I'll then ring Richard or someone or t'other that can post an update on here

So there you have it, you now know what I know - which for me is usually not much as it happens.

Anyone wanting to ring me on my mobile may do so, If I'm astride the Tiger though I'll not be able to take the call of course.

See you afloat.

Not a nice ride home on the Tiger, dark and raining, left Stalham at 1915 and got in for 2200.

Anyroadup,

What a great weekend.  Thoroughly enjoyed by the crew of 'B.A' from start to finish.  I've got some photo's to sort out which I'll do over this coming week.  Thanks to all forumites for helping making this weekend proper special for us.

I've had an E-mail from RB MTB102 thanking the NBF for a very good weekend which they enjoyed.  That's me pleased as punch as my first concern was that the MTB skipper/crew were not inconvenienced or out of pocket. They weren't and aren't  Cheers

Thanks for your hospitality over the weekend. We all enjoyed your event greatly.
When we got back to the yard and sorted we took 102 to sea for an hour and a half for sea trials. She behaved very well. There was no vibration at all upto 1900rpm on the shafts and around 25kts sea speed. I just need a few more revs though.

TerryTibbs    -- Aug-28-2012 @ 9:46 AM
We were lucky enough to be at Oulton on Friday to see the start of the C.I.C. and a great sight it was, MTB102 looked wonderful but had to set off a little fast to clear the Broad for the upcoming yacht pursuit race, the NBF member looked fantastic, all dressed to kill. Well done to all involved.

Sunday we were in Brundall so drove up to the A47 to watch the 37th Truck Fest and that was spectacular, 80 trucks all gleaming and sparkling carrying sick, disabled and disadvantaged children from Norwich to a day out at Pleasurewood Hills, the convoy was accompanied by Police outriders all waving to the crowds that lined parts of the route despite the (at times) torrential rain.
I was just wondering, if the C.I.C. was to take place again next year, could some thing similar be arranged to allow some less fortunate children to have a nice afternoon out on the river? Maybe in conjunction with The Nancy Oldfield Trust? I know there would be H&S issues but with a year to plan...
Just a thought.

I just wanted to say that I had a fabulous time right from 'practising' how to cruise in company with the Malankans and the Shadows (its a long story and involved me being thoroughly sandwiched!), chatting to everyone whilst waiting for the MTB at OBYS, the actual cruise, Friday night BBQ, the DTS to Geldeston through to Sunday when I managed a sneaky trip on the MTB through the lock when I drove over to pick dad up.

Dad too, had a great time and has declared it his best birthday ever.  I'm already fed up of hearing 'on the MTB this' 'did you know that...'
and he has yet to wipe the grin off his face.

Massive thank yous to everyone who was involved in any way, particularly those who ensured it was something I could participate in this year.

Finally, I was really touched by the the fact that everyone (literally everyone) asked how the engine was and offered help/support in various ways.  ... it got rather warm and is being investigated.  I'll keep you all posted and we will see who's theory was right.   Richard was a real super star for loitering with us at the tail end even when we had to slow right down, especially as its obvious that Brandy goes siginificantly faster.  (Just don't ask him about the coffee cup incident!!)

Well done NBF another excellent social event!

We had no plans to join the C in C until MTB crewing came up on the
horizon,at which point we joined without a boat. Time was too tight
on joining to get Rondonay down south so we 'slummed it' in three
star splendour at the Waveney House Hotel overnight.
Many thanks to Griff and Loreen, Steve and Pam for their hospitality
on Thursday evening and Friday up to Geldeston Locks.
Many thanks too to all the organizers, it was so worthwhile!
There were so many good things about the event, right down to the
happy bunch of dogs who have got used to hanging out together;
and our grandiose drop off at the hotel, with sail-past salutes from
the flotilla on the way back from Geldeston...I think they were
salutes...?

Thanks, I did keep a blank card for myself, for the pictures more than anything else.  Maybe I can get one of you lot to write it for me one day.

  Cheers Paul.
Also to add that it comes as filmed with no editing!
The best bit is at the start where that guy rowing along
without a care in the world until I shouted "Look behind
you!" The look on his face when he turned to see MTB102
bearing down on him was priceless!
