We have been working hard at the new gift shop at Womack Staithe, plenty of painting to do but we are at least half way through and still on schedule to have the shop open for business on 6th March.
I have a question for you experienced boaters. I have been trying to work out how long it would take me from my berth at Ranworth Staithe to comute to Womack Staithe in my outboard powered alumimium dinghy?
I know, I know, I am sorry to make you city bound folk jealous that I can comute to work and back by boat, but I had years of two hours each way around the M25 from Essex to Surrey before we moved up here in 2003, so you do have my sympathy.
I have had the bit of string out and measured the distance, I recon that at legal river speed it will take about 40 mins. So, who can be more acurate for me? Anyone have any ideas?

I thought the Broadcaster had some distance / times for cruising printed in it somewhere.
I dont have a copy to hand but if you can pick up one then you may find what you are looking for in there.
I would have thought just over the hour would be about right.

Thanks for the chart Lord Paul, that is really helpfull, it gives 7 miles from Ranworth to Potter and, as you know, Womack is a bit before, so I recon that my 40 mins is probably more like an hour each way.

Ranworth Staithe to Thurne Mouth = 4.27 miles
Thurne Mouth to Womack = 1.9 miles
6.17 miles total
BA speed limits are
Ranworth Dyke - 4mph
Ranworth to Upton Marsh - 5mph
Upton Marsh to Thurne Mouth - 6mph
Thurne Mouth to Womack Dyke entrance - 5mph
Womack Dyke entrance to staithe - 4mph
so, a legal average of just under 5mph, giving a time of approx 1 hour 15 minutes.
Maybe awkward speeds in a small dinghy though, because the tide runs at around 2mph at Thurne Mouth, requiring 8mph when "punching" it, which is above the maximum displacement speed for dinghy length boats.

Yes, If your boat is the one I'm thinking of, great in summer, less great in winter or rain. Nice, but oh so open! Of course, you could put a shed on it, but there could be complications...lol

Wow, new you guys would be the Oracle, thanks for the great info.
My 12' Ali will make 10 knots with a little 6hp on it, light as anything and will plane with two onboard, so no problem punching the tide.
Yes agree it can be a bit chilly, but dressed correctly that is not a problem, been a motorcyclist and a boater all my life, as long as you have the right gear on and you are warm and dry then all is well.
Rather be in the boat for an hour than the car for 20 mins, dog will be happier in the boat too.

We have an Excel spreadsheet that we've used for a
number of years to calculate journeys on the Broads and
the times are based on averages from actual diary times
over the years. I'm indebted to Strowager for his
calculations which are so close to our prediction that
I feel like we've been given a seal of approval, a bit
like a royal "By appointment to Strowager" (need a
crest to go with it). Our figures are 6.15 miles and 1
hour 22, but bear in mind that we're not usually going
at a speed indicative of late for work. Whatever it
takes, it must beat 6 miles on the M25. Looking
forward to the next visit to the shop in May.

Do me a favour and add in:
1)predicted forecast time tidal information,
2)a field for wind direction,
Then divide the rivers up into section of constant-ish heading.
Given 1 and 2 it should then be possible to predict boat speed over ground for each section, and thus calculate an optimum course for the Three Rivers Race, and avoid the now traditional "Left or Right" argument when we get to Thurne Mouth.
Anytime before the end of May will be fine, oh and keep this our little secret, don't tell the others.

No worries Barneyboat, I always slow passing moored boats and the alumimium dinghys that we sell are very light so do not put out a lot of wash.

Usual travel time from the top of Womack Staithe to the moorings at Ranworth is at least an hour and fifteen minutes in my experience.
It takes fifteen minutes to cruise from the yard to the mouth of the dyke without creating any wash and this time doesn't allow for giving way to Hunters yachts or the Albion.
Do I take it from your comments you would like to negotiate a mooring?

You are quite correct of course. Had not considered the conscience angle. Will go away and have a long talk with myself and see how we feel.
Considerably less dastardly than the tactics employed by some on here, including an unfeasibly bright yellow buoyancy aid, intended to act as a beacon to lure unsuspecting RCCs onto the putty in Heigham Sound.
