suew    -- Jan-8-2008 @ 10:05 PM
  Hi Folks,
I have been asked to co ordinate the food again this year. Over the years i have done this i have learnt quite a bit .This Year i want to do similar to what we did for the Broads ambition do.We catered better with not so much left over.
So with that in mind i would prefer people to give a donation of money, for myself and Christina to go and get what we need in the quanties required. To do this you can P M me with the amounts offered. Nearer the time i will let you know how to get the money to me .
As far as how much you want to give it can be as much or as little as you like. If i do not need it all i will give the left over money to Steve to add to the charities collected for.
I hope this is ok for everyone
Sue  Cheers

BroadAmbition    -- Jan-8-2008 @ 10:18 PM
Hi SueW,  I've already pledged a donation via the forum sign up thingymebobby, no doubt this will increase as my crew members onboard increases etc  -  Griff

  hi all,
i would just like to say thank you to all of you who have offered help / services for the meet up , it's means alot and very much appeciated ,
THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU !!

steve and vicky

BroadAmbition    -- Jan-17-2008 @ 1:55 AM

You may not of noticed, but the 'B.A' crew now has 7 of us signed up and we will no doubt end up with 9 of us onboard confirmed for the NBF weekend
(Tight squeeze that will be, we have already banned beans n brussel sprouts    Blush   )

So you organisers . . . . . .   I have an idea . . . .

Challenge Time:-      TUG-of-War    !!!!!!

The 'B.A' team will purchase and dontate a suitable trophy to be presented to the 2008 NBF Tug-of-War champions To be brought back the following year(s) and competed for again etc

I've been having a read up on the rules etc, and they are quite simple.

Two teams of eight, (Male / Female / Mixed etc) align themselves at the end of a rope (approximately 10 centimetres in circumference). The rope is marked with a "centre line" and two markings four metres either side of the centre line. The teams start with the rope's centre line directly above a line marked on the ground, and once the contest (the "pull") has commenced, attempt to pull the other team such that the marking on the rope closest to their opponent crosses the centre line, or the opponents commit a foul (such as a team member sitting or falling down).

A contest may feature a moat in a neutral zone, usually of mud or softened ground, which eliminates players who cross the zone and/or fall in.

Each team may also have an optional ninth person (captain) who can coordinate but must NOT pull

Best of 3 x pulls = decides the winning team

Now before all you HEAVYWEIGHTS go getting clever and banding together (You know who you are without mentioning any names) there is a MAXIMUM weight limit per team, therefore you cannot form a Super Heavyweight team etc and gain an unfair advantage.

Forget the 10mm Circumference rope, two of our 16mm headropes tied together will do the trick

So NBF organisers, can we do this??
Can we get enough teams together?

We will start it off with the 'B.A' Crew -

'Griffs Growlers'

It could be a sort of highlight of the day.

We would need of course a suitable stunningly attractive Girly Forum member to present trophy and kisses as per the norm  - Suitably qualified volenteers names on the back of a 2nd class stamp please!!

We also need a master of ceremonies / referee

So if the organisers are in agreement, get yourselfs organised into teams of 8, come up with a suitable name.

We could ask the Broads Authority to form a team if they attend again also the BSS crowd etc etc

Weight limit per team:- I will research this and post a maximum weight limit in due course.

Well Paul you're quite wrong there Mate, I ain't brave at all cos I ain't asking them . . . .  YOU ARE

However,

What I propse to do is set a weight limit per team and rely on members honesty to comply with that limit as we are all like minded mates/friends together etc

The teams should police the rules themselves. However should the referee suspect a team to be over the top weight allowance, then it will be easily done for a normal set of bathroom scales to be produced.

Non compliance with the Ref will result in disqualification etc. Weigh-ins can be done in the privacy of a gazeebo if need be. The Ref can of course allow slightly over top weight teams to compete at his/her discretion subject to the opposition being in agreement.

And for the Trophy name, seeing as we are donating it how about

'NBF - The Broad Ambition Tugging Trophy'

   tounge-in-cheek   Evil Grin    LOL  -  Griff

Now then Chaps, DANGEROUS ground here.

Do NOT mention weight limits where the ladies team is concerned.

I will be a normal gent and offer that it would be IMPOSSIBLE for the Ladies to offer a team anywhere near the weight limit let alone over it, even if they had too many in the team!!

  Well...

I'm inclined to say that I'll throw my weight behind this suggestion!

Girls - never fear, its universally accepted that we ladies lie about our age and our weight. We can always shave a bit off, as long as we dont push our luck toooo far (such as claiming to be 25 when we have at least a vague memory of the Bay City Rollers!, or telling our friends we are still a size 12 then cutting the labels out of our new clothes!

Oops! I'm giving our secrets away....

PS A belated happy new year to all - we got a truly gruesome bug on the 2nd Jan that floored us both for best part of 2 weeks - yuk! Am now catching up with all the threads... and chucking a few controversial comments about, as usual   Playful Wink

griff, your mooring rope admirable as it may be is too thin for this purpose(slipping rope will cause ropeburns)

  Hi all

Firstly apologies for being quiet for a while but myself and BT have had a few 'issues'.

Anyway, I'll happily take part in any tug-of-war match and am willing to volunteer my 20st (or near offer, depending on the pie and chips intake of the days leading upto the meet) to any team (as well as the exhibition match) willing to make me the best offer.
I have had experience having been involved with a team in my younger days.

There you go, the Forum Flyweights against Broad Ambition. Not the crew, the boat.

BA must, within 2 minutes, be cruising without any of the flyweights attached to the rope (and dry!!).

With regard to the rope, I believe I have one at Decoy but cant get down there until Good Friday so will have to let you know later

Have you seen the state of the island recently??

I passed by on Friday morning (25th) and there are some HUGE mole hills and lots of them, big trip hazard not to mention somewhat unsightly. What it needs is a man with shovel and barrow, and it does need doing.

(I did look in our deck locker and couldn't find a barrow, or shovel come to that otherwise I would have had a go at it myself)  -  Griff

Alfie was looking at retiring at the end of last season but has told us he will def be there this year. We see regularly(most weekends) from easter onwards so will keep a close ear to the ground re his plans - I certainly think that when he does retire, we should organise something for him, and a presentation at the meet might be a great idea.

As for those moles - they delare war each year, but Alf gets em sorted one way or another! What a star, and a true gent. We will miss him when he does hang up his little money bag and notebook...

with regards to the island caretaker Alfie , i to belive that we should give him something for he's help / time that he has gave us the forum with the forum annual meet up and with the mini meets , he is a truly wonderfull gent that has always had time to talk and help people that moor on the island ,

As last year just to confirm Cappy & crew will be mudweighting.

Scooby will be with us for mud weight taxi duties.

We aim to get there on Fri night and if anyone is mudweighting that night and wants a lift to/from shore then toot / hail or call us on PMR ch6 and we'll get you to shore (and maybe get you back  Playful  )
One proviso - if you are coming out of the pub on Fri and a bit worse for wear you **will** be required to wear an LJ.

  SOS

A few weeks ago the car engine went and died, which resulted in having to buy a new car...not a major problem (although my wallet did squeal)...

Didn't think about this until yesterday....

Scooby is on taxi duty at the meet, tow bar was on the old car.....

We hope to get a new bar fitted in time, but if not would it be possible for someone tow scooby to the yard and back? Petrol of course will be paid.

As I say we hope to have new bar fitted by then, this is just a contingency sort of plan

thanks in advance

For the last two site meets I've thoroughly enjoyed giving people a brief sailing experience, and would have loved to do the same again. Unfortunately I can't make the meet as it clashes with the launch of a book written by a friend of mine and in which I feature (it's a speleological book), and I'm required to give demonstrations during the launch in Northumberland.

I hope to be back offering sailing at next year's meet.

  Right Then,

Our crew is getting organised at last so here we go:-

There will be nine of us onboard 'B.A' for the weekend (That will be somewhat interesting)

BBQ - SueW, we hereby pledge £90 cash (Handed to you on the day)

Beer Tent - RobinW, we hereby pledge £135 cash (Handed to you on the day)

Raffle - Captain joshie / Jaguar, we hereby pledge £200 cash (Handed to you on the day)

Steve n Vicky, we can bring down a petrol generator with fuel cans, 110v transformer and lighting if you wish, we also have a good gazeebo we can bring as well  -  Let me know please

We are trying for a 1/2 doz or so Lap dancers but sadly seem to be failing with this one, any volunteers???

Tug-of-War

We are struggling to find a 'proper' tug of war rope (G.C's fault)  anyroadup this event WILL take place as we will manage using our two head ropes tied together if we have to.

The Teams - Ladies and Gentlemen there is a weight LIMIT (Which wll be very easy for the ladies to comply with) the teams are to consist of 8 x persons pulling totalling no more than a MAXIMUN limit of 120 stone per TEAM,  PLUS a caller who is of course unlimited.

Referee – We NEED a referee please, anyone fancy initiating?  You get to guess the weight of all competitors!! (Could be a bit dangerous with the Ladies that one)

The 'B.A' crew will donate a suitable trophy that will be competed for year on year. The trophy will be named -

'The Norfolk Broads Forum Tuggers Trophy'
(Crazydavefour - you got a estimate / invoice for me yet?)

This years winners will of course be 'Griffs Growlers'

During the day 'Broad Ambition' will of course be 'Open to Visitors' and seeing as the organisers are doing the saily trip around the Broad, then 'Broad Ambition' can match that and do a 'Stinky' trip around the same Broad but in far more style of course.

Think that is all for now, Looking forward to seeing and abusing the lot of you/us

Griff

Edited for upgrading max weight limit of teams

Mike - Yep you are right, got my sums wrong there,

Better make it 120 stone = 15 stone average, we have to be carefull here as the lighter teams and of course the ladies will be disadvantaged. In fact I reckon the Ladies team ought to be allowed an extra tugger!!

We certainly have some very generous people out there.

This should be put in the Moorings thread but...

It's alright folks promising to provide sorties out onto Malthouse Broad but...what makes you think you'll have a mooring from which to run these trips?  Playful

Seriously though, Griff...it may be quite difficult for you to run a trip service around the Broad as, if you get a mooring on the island  Evil Grin  , you'll be packed in so darned tight you'll never get BA out and back in again...not keeping the timbers intact anyway!

Griff my friend...I meant no disrespect nor was I trying to be a clever-arse (for a change...lol!)  Blush

I would be seriously concerned about BA's gorgeous lines being compromised by the forum-meet sardines game. As it is, I want to ensure there are some nice soft fenders between her and her neighbours anyway!

Sunday morning might be a great time to do the 'round the Broad' thing? A few may have departed and we might be slightly less thronged...

John

BroadAmbition    -- Jun-3-2008 @ 11:59 AM
  Dibbler Mate,

No offence was taken at all even a little bit, I fully understand what you are saying and you are quite correct in what you say (Clever Dick  Wink  )

You reckon any of the 'B.A' crew will be in any sort of responsible / fit state Sunday morning??   Blush

By around Midday we may well be so.

We have plenty of fenders and so what if she gets scratched? We already have a few battle scars so one or two more won't make much difference, we treat her as a working boat not a museum piece to be wrapped in cotton wool.

Smile

  Hi Everyone,

Talking to Steve last night, our crew at the Quayside Club have donated a raffle prize - a weekend (Fri. to Mon.) on our 1937 Jack Powles 'Glitterwake'.

Steve said I should post to let you all know, so thats what I've done!

Looking forward to meeting everyone soon.

Kind regards,
Gordon

  Hi Griff,

At the end of the day, the forum has been good for us - both for members and for boat acquisition - and of course the main reason, getting feedback on the concept.

It's good to be able to put something back.

While we are on about prizes / donations etc

I have previously hand delivered a polite 'Cap-in-Hand' letter to Richardson's asking for them to donate a suitable something for the cause. As of yet I have heard precisley - NOWT but there is still time and I live in hope  (If you want to see a copy of it them pm me)

I donated a prize to last years meet - that was a four day weekend onboard 'B.A' for up to 6 guests with me as skipper. This prize was sold in the auction. As of yet the winner has not taken up the prize, the prize is still good and WILL be honoured when the winner sees fit.

This is the reason that this year we have donated a cash prize rather than a weekend onboard as we are running out of free weekends in my social diary!!

  Hi all

RE:- the tug of war, will it be sorting out teams on the day? Or is it a case of sorting teams before the event? If so i offer my services to the highest bidder (that is if i haven't already been conscripted), my stats are 5ft 10in, 19.5(ish) stone, good leg and upper body strength (i'm used to pulling 1 and a quarter mile long bits of wire attached to heavy lumps of wood and metal) and i'm available to the highest bidder   lol

Ref Bouncy Castle - Not a small item even when folded down with air blower etc I supsect. The GriffTile van would be ideal for this BUT I cannot help out in this instance.
We depart the wet-shed on Friday morning and I don't plan on seeing or being anywhere near the van until Monday afternoon - Sri M8

Tug-of-War    -    The rope is at last sorted

And it is a 'Proper' Tug-of-war rope as well. It turns out that my local village school has one. I've paid them a visit and in exchange for a donation they will let me borrow it for the weekend.

So that means that I'm now bringing a large heavy rope, petrol generator. Petrol cans, 2 x Floodlights, oh and a gazeebo. Looks like I'll have to pay for yet another horrendously expensive dinghy from Richo's yet again then. Oh well, ce cera cera.

Pendlemac, welcome to the forum  Cheers

The meet is open to all members regardless of when they joined. Please be aware that if you arrive by boat, it is most likely that you'll have to mudweight though. There will be a ferry service to shuttle people to and from mudweighted boats.

If afloat, please arrive at the island after 12 noon on the Saturday (21/6/08).

If arriving by car, there will be a free ferry service to the island. If you can supply an approximate ETA we can arrange to have a ferry on its way ready for your arrival. Failing that, a mobile phone contact number for the ferry service will be posted shortly.

Oh yes...it's best if you sign up in the Forum Events section. Gives us a better idea of numbers so we can provision accordingly. Thanks.

John

  Hi Robin

The usual supply of several kegs of draft something. Hopefully will be along the lines of

2 x real ale
1 x cream ale
1 x stout

perhaps one of something else.

It all depends what has conditioned sufficiently.

There will be a couple of dozen gallons of something drinkable, touchwood.

  Dear Members,

Just to let you know you have been liberated from an oft derided "meet requirement" this year - that of the sticky name label!

So many folk now know each other we thought we would dispense with them this year. I appreciate there are some "forum meet virgins" but hopefully that will mean that everyone will have to mingle. I honestly don't think anyone will be too shy to join in!

However, the meet organisers (for our sins!) WILL be labelled so you know who we are. Miss Clipboard (aka me) will be looking out for you all, and will hopefully be able to point you in the direction of members you are looking for. I will also have a supply of blank labels for those who want to declare themselves, as it where!  We'll have a list of those attending to make sure we don't get any passing holidaymakers, but its not too late to add your name to the sign up list, and although I'll be printing lists etc for Chief Moorings Manager Dibs etc next weds/thurs, I will check for any late additions before we leave home friday.

Hope this is OK with you all - speak up if you have any points to raise.

One last thought - do we need a mugshots post of organisers for those of you who don't know us by sight?

Lookng forward to seeing everyone,

Karen

BroadAmbition    -- Jun-13-2008 @ 12:23 PM
  Karen my dear,

Just how are the 'B.A' crew supposed to recognise each other let alone anyone else then eh ??  Blush

Bouncy Castle –

We are sort of sorted over collection / returning this from the Norwich area.

I’m determined that the kids will not miss out on having it there, to that end I’ve rallied to the call from Steve n Vicky, but it’s far from ideal and will involve me re-arranging our plans to suit the bouncy castle.

We were planning to be overnight at Thurne Dyke / Horning with a visit to P.H as some of our crew onboard don’t get down that often and we like to get them about to see some of the system whenever possible.

The situation now is that when we arrive at Stalham v.late on Thursday 19th after dropping gear off from the ‘GriffTile’ van I will then drive it round to the Maltsters car park, one of my crew will have to follow me there to bring me back via road to Stalham. Friday night now means that we will now have to be at Malthouse Broad for the evening so that on Saturday morning I can jump in the van and go off to Norwich somewhere to collect said castle, back to Ranworth and then over to the island with it and drop it off along with the rest of the gear we are bringing.
We will then depart with ‘B.A’ for P.H hopefully not too late, and return to the ‘Meet’ at a time instructed by our Harbour Master for either a mudweight or land berth.

Sunday lunchtime we will have to get the lot over to the van again, I’ll then drive to Norwich to return castle, I could then do with one volunteer to meet me at Stalham and drive me back to Malthouse Broad.

So it will work in a fashion, the key for us is to get away early enough from Malthouse Broad on Sat forenoon.

Griff

Karen, I thought your stickers were a GREAT idea last year! When it got late and Boatboys barrels were empty, all you had to do was look down at your sticker and then aim for said boat! Playful

roya    -- Jun-15-2008 @ 7:35 PM
  Hi Nige (acle pob),
will it be all right if i back the day boat in front of Josh on sunday morning so we can put the bags of rubbish in the wheelie bin, that MR Cator has at the moorings.

That way we leave the Island all nice and tidy.

I had hoped this posting to ask you to add our 2 names to the list, but sadly it is not,  as you might have read in my thread on the Hire Boat section I've failed so far to hire a 2 berth motor cruiser from tomorrow Friday.   Seems 2 berths of the modest size are extremely popular.
Have had offers of larger boats but of course for 2 means out of price range, also my wish to go beyond Potter Heigham might well be out too.  Still hopefull the holiday will happen but looks like a start during next week.

  Hi all

Just a quick update, i'm still coming but by car now as the boat has broken (fuel leak, and can't get anybody to look at it until after the weekend).
On the positive side this means that there will be a car available for the Tesco runs if we run out of anything, or if anything has been forgotten.
It also means that i wll have to stay sober so i can act as a stand in ferry pilot if the need arises (yes i know that there is probably loads of offers in that area).

Oh well, maybe next year i'll make it by boat...

I havn't registered as I was supposed to be doing something else tomorrow BUT it may have all turned pear-shaped. If I turned up (clutching a wine box of course)in the afternoon would I still be allowed in? Or made to walk the plank as a penance?

You got that dead wrong. I been much misunderstood.
This is my side of the story.

There I was lying low in the grass as usual. I'd set up station near a blue boat that always smelled really nice, a combination of keep-net and something really attractive. A grumpy bloke seemed to be more or less living on the boat..he smelled OK too.

This particular weekend, there was a lot of coming and going and the nice smell was stronger than usual.Night came and the grumpy bloke went to bed. I snoozed for a bit, dunno how long, when Grumpy, he gets up and heads for the bushes. I followed quietly, and boy was I glad I did! There was a whole fountain of Stella flowing! Well, I know now that was the name of the really attractive 'something'.  Was I grateful!

Now I don't know how it is but this Stella seemed to affect my ability to stay upright, but I wanted to show my gratitude to Grumpy so I hugged him round the ankles.

I suppose it was a mistake, 'cos he went down like a log! He said some words I haven't been able to find on this forum and went back in the boat.

Soon after I found a picture of me bu the boat with some writing on it. I thought it might say something nice so I started learning to read this forum so's I could find out.

Does 'Beware of the Grass Monster' sound friendly to you? Do I deserve this for being friendly? NO. How do you think I felt eh??

Now there's a bit of a surprise and a mystery. The blue boat's still there but no Grumpy and NO STELLA. I was expecting a regular supply of the stuff, but no, not a drop for weeks.

I have noticed a lot of coming & going this weekend and  a faint whiff of my beloved, so I will seek Stella out. It's my mission.

  Grass Monster

Oh! Sella, my Stella
Where have you gone???

  Evening,

Just home from the meet, think there may be a few incriminating piccies later!!

Roya has been renamed Rudolph. He has drunk that much Saint Ettiene (Poor mans Stella), that his nose is now red LOL

We saw the raffle before we left, will leave it to John and Jo to announce those results.

One last thing, what a ferrymaster that young Jake is. He could teach Richard alot about manoeuvring a boat, just a shame it wasnt under sail.

  Hi All

We have just got back from a very enjoyable meeting. Nice to see so many members old and new and to put names and faces together.

I would like to propose a vote of thanks to Steve and his team for putting on a really good event. Much appreciated by all of those who were there.

I will post some photographs when I have sorted them. I will try to get them into a Flickr album rather than post them on the site as this is a lot quicker.

Best wishes

  Hi all

I flatly refuse to ackowledge that i had a hangover this morning, in fact i was very tired and a little bit de-hydrated, a fact backed up by Karen who felt exactly the same.

All in all though, another great meet, and the breeze that greeted us this morning was definately welcome, until it came to leaving the island that is.

Agai thanks to Steve and Vicky for organising it.
