HI After spending our last holiday with our family on board a large 8 berth cruiser my wife and I fancy a week in September on board a small two berth cruiser but we quite fancy hireing one from an independent boat yard as a matter of change from the norm. Has any one out there any advice as to which boatyard offer the best service/value/boats to hire your comments would be most helpful. regards hollywood regards hollywood

There are three immediately obvious choices! Martham Boats, Maffett Cruisers and Pacific. If you fancy "traditional wood" for a change try Maffet at Loddon or Martham. Martham offer the advantage of being topside of the bridge of course! Pacific Cruisers are also at Loddon and include the famous "Chuggity Bob" within their fleet which you may well have read about and would seem to suit what you are seeking. My own choice would be either "Merlin" or "Swallow" from Maffett. Trevor www.normanboats.co.uk

Hi, I strongly recommend Ludham bridge boatyard. They have 2 brand new 2+2 25 foot cruisers based on the sheerline 740 built to an exceptional standard & high specification. Call 01692 631011. PS. They are not picnic boats...... Regards, TISCA

Don't forget that all the yacht hiring yards are also independent if you want something different. Bill...(The Ancient Mardler)

After over 41 years of hire boating with either Blakes or Hoseasons we decided to go the independant route this year.So in July we arrived to pick up our Freedom boat.I have never been on such a dirty boat and on the following morning be had to get the toilets pumped and there was very little oil in the engine. Not the start to the holiday we expected and one we will not repeat.

This question is probably going to go against the grain for woody fans but here goes: Would it be possible (engine size/power) to hire one of the older auxiliary yachts and just potter* around (*bonus, would be able to get under that bridge) in the Northern rivers with the mast/sails down all the time. Just to try and recapture the nostalgia of a pre-60s Broads. Roy

quote:"...... Possible but very uncomfortable and worrying dangerous for you damage deposit. Masts and booms do not sit comfortably on your cabin top, meaning it will be a pain to live with (no ability to raise the cabin roof to give you reasonable headroom) and they overhang the back of the boat when lowered making it highly likely you will wreck the mast in mooring manoeuvres. If you want to recapture the atmosphere of pre-1960s hire boating go to Martham Boatbuilding and Development Company. Greg Chapman My Boating Biography The Three Rivers Race

By the way. Freedom are not 'independent' as meant here as they are with Hoseasons. APOLOGIES. Freedom are not associated with Hoseasons. Don't get old! Thank you rafsa. BOF - Clive This message was edited by BOF2 on Aug-12-10 @ 7:37 AM
