Great Pub - Treated like locals!

Went there for for a pint and something to eat after leaving the boat for winter storage over the river. 'Happy Hour' from 15.00-17.00hrs came (and went!) We had a great time, food brilliant with a massive choice. Bar staff and Landlord very friendly.

Mooring Description :
Stern on in the summer outside pub. Can be tricky when tide flowing. but landlord says side on when quiet is OK.
Food Description :
The three of us had snack meals which were great but a more extensive menu available

Mooring Description :
stern on!!! i gave up after 3 attempts to reverse into a 12ft gap with the tide running fast, ended up mooring up at the staith just down stream under the bridge, tide/wind was not a problem when we got there, pub is a very short 3 min walk up a well paved path so its easy walk back after a few refreshing drinks.
Food Description :
all our meals were spot on, no complaints every thing was tasty and good portions.

Gets my vote for best pub on S Broads!

Absolutely loved this place! Moored for the night no prob. Met awesome locals, staff were fantastic, food was to die for! Busy pub, great atmosphere, met tons of nice people! Hit about 20 pubs on our week on S Broads and this 1 def gets my vote for best food! Good prices for the quality/amount you get 4 sure! Great selection of drink, dog friendly! Absolutely top notch! Teen daughter was grounded to boat 4 the nite but they let me take a plate out to feed her, so wasn't that much of a punishment, she loved the food and being able to eat on the boat, lol Beautiful sitting riverside in the huge garden also, can't say 1 thing wrong about this place! Beautiful pub, def go back next time!

Mooring Description :
Great stern-on moorings in front of pub, key word stern-on, few idiots went side-on taking up space for others who could have stopped.
Food Description :
Food was amazing! Had the rump steak special after delicious appetizers, best rump steak I've had! Came with awesome chips, grilled tomato, mushroom, salad, amazing sauce, luved it! Dare you to try the Big Bell burger! Massive! Homemade burger, best burger I've had in Eng, delicious! All of it was fabulous! mmmm I'm salivating thinkin about it, lol

Bring back the Old Bell

Have been fond of this place for a number of years now, it used to be a hideout from boat maintenance duties in the winter and a welcome break on late Friday night arrivals in the summer. However in the last year since the purchase of the Bear and Bells at Beccles the previous high standards have slipped including the dissappearance of the specials board which used to not only be good value but excellent standard offering a good selection of freshly prepared dishes. On a positive note the ale is still very good.

Mooring Description :
Outside pub but moor with care and check tide times as strong tidal current.
Food Description :
Not up to previous high standrds.

Very Nice Pint

Stopped in for a couple of pints, sheltering from a gale after putting our mast back up. Pleasant welcoming Pub, did seem to be a lot of staff/management chatting amonst themselves, but service was prompt and friendly. Had wherry and Adnams Bitter (a couple of other on as well), both very good. Well worth a return visit.

Mooring Description :
We were on free moorings downstream of bridge (exposed to wind and tide), but they have thier own upstream of bridge as well.
Food Description :
Did not eat.

Not The Best

We went here just under a week ago and decided to try some of the food, however it was a bit up and down. One good thing was that there was a specials board with a two-for-£12 offer on some dishes from Monday to Friday. We wanted to try the chicken curry, however we were told that they had run out. We ended up having two lots of Sausage and Mash, a Sausage and Mash meal and a chicken nuggets meal off the children's menu. We also had two novelty chocolate ice creams which were very childish indeed.

Mooring Description :
There are some spaces on the southern side of St. Olaves bridge, which was where we moored, however, beware of the occasional strong wind/tide.
Food Description :
The Sausage and Mash meal wasn't the best. The four sausages were only half-cooked and were very small (some of them looked like chipolatas). The mash was very creamy, but the peas and gravy were fine. The chips on the chicken nuggets meal were a tad cold and the chocolate ice cream was a joke. On the next table, I noticed a boy who ordered a home-made burger and when it came to eating it, he said he did not like it and left most of it. From where we were sitting, we would probably think the same as the burger looked and must have tasted disgusting.

Welcome

Havent eaten there but have used the pub as a staging post many times and they have always been happy to provide coffee / tea on request (at a price). Normally made to feel welcome, must admit more so during the winter months when the river is quiet.

Major Disappointment

Was with a party of eight Autumn 2006. Pub almost empty. Restaurant empty.

Mooring Description :
Some difficult stern on moorings, but a few alongside moorings a short distance away.
Food Description :
The very worst meal ever in any Broads pub in the last forty years of visiting. We felt as if we had intruded on the staff's break! The service was disinterested at best and downright hostile on two occassions. The meal took ages to arrive. Some of the party had finished before the last meals arrived. The food was bland, over-cooked to a cinder and dripping in grease. Our complaint to the owner/manager was received without even a hint of an apology.

Wonderful old pub full of character. Great beer including Old Speckled Hen on draft. Plenty of seating outside overlooking the river.

Mooring Description :
Free moorings approx 200 metres away. From the moorings head towards the bridge down a public footpath at the back of the houses facing onto the river and follow to the main road. The pub is at the other side.
Food Description :
Had one of the nicest beef sandwiches I've ever had served in french bread with side salad. The beef was excellent!
