A great local pub, hidden away

I notice there has been no review on here since 2009. We went there in 2015 for the first time since 1999 and have returned at least once a year since (including last week). We went in for a Sunday lunchtime drink, then booked a table for 3 in the evening in their newly decorated restaurant (see below).Moored up at Dilham, which few holidaymakers seem to know about (good!) because there's only space for about 3/4 boats. The smell of the Sunday roast permeated the pub and meant we were happy to stay for 3 afternoon pints before staggering back to the boat! (vegetarians may disagree) Since returning in 2015, I've found it small and friendly, with an array of regulars present and a welcoming feel to visitors. The Ghost Ship was excellent. I think they had Woodford Wherry and Nelson on as well. Two pints and a soft drink came to just over £8, which was the cheapest I paid all week (and much cheaper than home). I gather they do a lot in the local community as well and have recently won an award of some kind for contribution to the community. On the day we visited, they had a bus load of pensioners booked in for Sunday lunch, so news travels far and wide. They had done out their restaurant since our last visit. It is a lot brighter and open plan and much improved. I do hope they put the finishing touches to it though, as H & S will have something to say about exposed wires at power points and light fittings that haven't been secured to the wall. I get the impression it's a bit of a DIY job - hopefully they'll put that right in time for the next season. There used to be a bowling green in the back when I was there in 1999. It looks like they use this for garden events in the summer now. We love visiting this pub, I think mainly because it's slightly off the beaten track and not many boaters know about it. I want them to do well enough to make a few quid, but no so well we can never get mooring there again! Definitely worth a visit if you want the day to drift by.

Mooring Description :
Dilham Staithe, about 1/4 mile walk from the pub. Room for about 3/4 boats and a small turning area. At the end of a narrowing dyke. Really big boats will find it tight.
Food Description :
My daughter had the 'Cross Keys Burger'. It was a 'small' portion which was an incredibly reasonable £4.95. They only had larger burgers that day, but still charged us for a small one! The smaller portions will appeal to those with children, smaller appetites or simply wishing to save a few quid. This is a refreshing alternative to paying a minimum of £10 a head for most main courses on the Broads these days. My wife had the East Indies vegetable dish for £10.95 and I had Roast Beef for £8.95. Very good value compared to other pubs we'd eaten at that week, although the beef wasn't as good as the beef at the Kings Arms (Ludham) on carvery night. We all had a dessert. The sherry trifle was excellent. A lovely evening. You can pay up to £20 for a mixed grill or £17 for a steak, but in my opinion, ordering steak at a pub simply isn't worth the money anymore. All Broads pubs wanted £16+ for steaks. The food we ate was very good quality.
