Commanding Light: Had hired this for a week in October 2011 during the record breaking temperatures that graced us for our week aboard. Let me begin by saying should you want a full video report of the holiday, simple look up ‘All Aboard Commanding Light’ in the Holiday Tales section of this Forum. Commanding Light started life as ‘Ferry Commander’ back in the late 80’s and her interior has not changed much since. Dark laminates dominate, but a refreshed galley has helped bring some light and modernity to the boat. Fully carpeted throughout (apart from cockpit and galley area). Comfortable seating, flat creen television and stereo JVC radio. 1400w 240 Inverter and microwave oven. Berths: very firm forward double berth. Middle double is over the engine, foam of this berth is 'sagging' and lost its support and needs changing. Engine - the original Perkins is loud and smelt of diesel and is under the middle double berth, therefore is not the best of cabins for sleeoing. (many of this type of boat have such design so worth calling the yard to find out where the engine is located). Two singles berths, one a sprung mattress and I pitty who has to sleep on this as it is very worn and you can feel the metal springs through it. Most comfy berth is the single to the right of the sprung mattress. Soft foam, but sprung base most comfy bed on a boat ever experienced! This cabin has a small 'desk' ideal for using a laptop on. Heads: ‘Sitz’ bath works well, but soon you run out of hot water so alas to use really need the engine going. Toilet is very high off floor in middle heads, sink very small. Forward cabin very large, lovely en-suite just right in size. *NOTE* this boat has only 2 warm air heating outlets, saloon and forward cabin. All other areas are not heated and those that are heated the heat is luke warm and would not make at all comfortable on cold nights! Easy to steer, but engine has seen its best days behind it. Lacks torque for close quarter manoeuvring all RPM to MPH calculations are out by a lot. Using a Navman GPS and two smart phone GPS Spped Apps we got the same readings in still water that 1750 RPM gets you 4 MPH as opposed to the 1200 RPM indicated. We had some mechanical problems such as replaced starter motor, battery and cooker ring that would not stay alight. Herbert Woods however very helpful and allowed us a free day launch to go up to Hickling with. Would hire again without hesitation from Herbert Woods, but go for something newer – however 2012 prices now put Commanding Light at £530.00 for a week – which, for 42ft of boat and 6 people is very good pricing.
