I hired Star Gem 4 in July 2011. It has to be made clear that the interior of our boat was nothing like that which is shown on Richardson’s website and brochure. Seee ‘Newton7’s’ photos to see that you now have vinyl ‘tub’ chairs which had very little padding on the seat and a much more ‘sit up and beg’ seating position compared to the older, and much more comfy looking soft armchairs that are shown online and in Dan Horner’s photos. The double bed is short, if you are over 5ft7 you will have to sleep diagonally on it so your feet will fit under the sideboard of the boat which covers the last 7 or so inches of the bottom of the bed. This has been noted in other posts about this boat on the main forum. Other niggles was the fact our boat (No. 4 in the class) had a serious damp issue, this clearly was hidden behind the paneling but the smell was very bad and we had to stock up on air fresheners. Yes boats can be musty, but this was terrible and our clothing too smelt of this. The DVD player was not hooked up to the TV, the stereo speakers either side of the TV were not magnetically shielded thus this caused the TV to display a green/violet hue when on, the removal of said speaker and use of it against the set in reverse polarity cured the problem and we then had the TV sat above the above the space provided for it. Upon putting said TV back in the space, the colour hue returned. Poor thought in design there. Other than the above, the boat is basic in equipment provided such as only a small pearing knife and bread knife miss matched plates. Cups and glasses were nice though. Bathroom, the hot tap in sink did not work needing the shower head to fill sink with hot water. This appears a huge moan list, and perhaps it is a little bit of that but one expects such things like taps to work and TV’s to be watchable on board. The boat however looks smart outside, and once one got the hang of the very unresponsive rudder, the driving position was very comfortable indeed. Newish Nanni engine meant for quiet cruising when underway. Lovely to have the retractable sliding roof, no leaks. Window in back cabin on Starboard side was replaced with Perspex and had scratched badly and more worryingly one could lift it out entirely with ease. So as you can see a mixed bag, good and bad..If I went again, Would go with Pearl Horizon at Acle. Same boat, but fitted out to a better standard.

I hired Star Gem 2 in May 2007 for 3 weeks. This is a refurbished, older hulled forward drive cruiser which sleeps two in a 'four poster' bed in the rear cabin. It has 240V electrics throughout, a microwave, a TV and video player and a CD radio. The mid mounted Nannidiesel is quite noisy when underway, much more so than the hydraulic drive units fitted to later boats. The central heating is powered by a Webasto diesel fired unit and is efficient and effective, however the pump which provides the diesel makes quite an audible clicking sound in the rear cabin. The shower is good, and there is a huge hot water tank which heats up quickly when underway. Sadly the water pump for the taps is incredibly noisy, and, perhaps due to an airlock in the system, often cycles at night. The dashboard pump cutout is there for a good reason! The propellor cavitates at anything above about 5mph, so Breydon is best traversed within the recommended time slots. The craft has a distinct 'left pull' at normal cruising speeds, so requires constant attention when underway. The double bed is only 5'11" long. This is the only real 'caveat'. If you're over about 5'8", or on your honeymoon, think about a boat with better bed access! The centrally mounted chrome pole which supports the roof gives scope for excellent entertainment! There is tons of room in this boat, and plenty of storage, it is well equipped, and thanks to some huge concrete blocks, well ballasted. You will not be disturbed by passing washes! The helm position is comfortable for two, the armchairs and footstool are excellent. TV reception we found to be problematic, but the video gives one an alternative! The CD radio is irritating in that it is mounted so low down in the console', that tuning it means lying on the carpet! Overall a great boat, spoilt by four issues, a noisy engine, very noisy water pump, a marked tendency to turn to port, and most seriously a short bed! It's cheap to hire, and Richardsons provided an excellent service. You pays your money...... TJ
