Watch a day by day account of San Julian at www.youtube.com/feelmyheaven - I hired San Julian from 19th April 2012. One of the first things that struck me was the removal of the forward safety rails around the bow. A shame, as they added to the over all looks of the boat. No small stools are provided which once were (see Dan Horner pics in 2006) one would have been ideal for the real cabin dressing table and mirror – without one must kneel on floor. New Nanni engine means for quiet cruising and is responsive. Very easy to handle and tends to actually want to pull left or right in reverse which is helpful when stern on mooring. Light steering on upper helm takes some getting used to. Comfortable berths – clean and tidy throughout and complete with carpet – suspect this will make way to orange or green lino as with most of the other Richardsons fleet which is not to my personal taste. Galley has a new cooker which performed well, double sink and microwave – great range on pots and pans too – I bought and left a decent non-stick frying pan wonder if will have been kept? Externally some new painting has been done on the blue areas on side decks and at the rear too. Very cosy boat with no drafts, but heating to rear cabin is non existent just a light cool breeze comes out of vent, salon is very hot and would be fine for early or late season and forward cabin between the two, good warmth. I did have issues, 3 days with heating problems – new unit fitted – engine belts failed, were all replaced, stern gland also needed to be greased and tightened, new connections fitted to bilge pump and a stuck float switch meant it had not been working. This however has not made me think less of the boat so much so wish to hire it again. I was also single handed hirer and she was easy to moor and great views afforded from the external helm. £99 fuel was used during week but I do cover a lot of miles with not much shore leave so was expected – staff were warm, helpful and engineers attended to problems rapidly and knew there stuff. Bad luck can happen but overall a great boat, great base at Stalham and super value out of season.

We had a very good holiday on this boat in 2006. We liked the dual steering positions, and were impressed that the external helm had enough seating around it for a full crew of six to all sit out together, and also a quite useful area ideal for sunbathing! The aft double has the deck above it, but has a reasonable clearance so we did not feel too cramped/closed in when sleeping in it. The layout and space is well designed and felt more spacious than 32ft. The boat is approaching 20 years old, not amazingly old as hireboats go, and this did show in some areas, mainly galley worktops, galley lino and the dark(ish) laiminates but was in good condition, ran faultlessly all week and new flotex flooring and recent(ish) upholstety also made her still look in good condition, and comfortable. The galley is also a little short on worktop space, and the signwriting looked a bit scruffy and overdue for re-doing by a few seasons, otherwise the exterior was well presented. Would certainly be happy to hire her again. Hirebase staff were friendly, pleasant, and helpful. As always.
