Merrymore: Hired during September 2011. For a full report of the holiday look up ‘Merymore...Not So Merry’ in the Holiday Tales section of this Forum. Barnes Brinkcraft of Wroxham give the impression of a premium brand and a boatyard that would offer a premium service. Their pricing is therefore at the higher end of the scale - and for this type of craft especially compared to other boatyards that have the same type of craft for hire. I therefore thought that their service, boat upkeep and appearance would all be premium. I was disappointed. This however is a review of the boat, not their staff and service. Merrymore was built by Moore & Company circa 1993 and was then a very premium and lovely craft, alas in her years of service at sometime she has had close contact with a bridge forward grab rail on sliding canopy is missing and the whole canopy is now misaligned and does not shut fully. You therefore have a good 1inch gap at the front, rear and along sides letting in a great deal of draft and on a windy day all the cabin curtains flutter as if a window is left open. Not a good boat for chilly nights then. Eberspächer ‘Airtronic’ warm air heating is provided and to all cabins. Very effective, quiet and at least Barnes Brinkcraft have not bypassed the thermostat on the cabin control and so one can vary the temperature – we had it set on low over night. Should you hire a boat that has an Eberspächer ‘Airtronic’ warm air heating system I feel these are the best out there, some yards however bypass the thermostat making them ‘on’ or ‘off’ operation. Very comfortable berths, all foam inserts not too soft or firm. Proper duvets, nice decent pillows. Many of the curtain hooks missing, salon curtains are in drawers and clip up – some of them anchor points missing – we used stick on plastic hooks bought for a £1.00 to rectify this problem. Large stain on saloon seat covering (one can see this on their website image of the boat interior even) fridge thermostat broke – no replacement could be sourced so a ‘temporary fix’ was made by helpful engineer giving some control over the fridge as things were actually freezing inside it as it was on 24hrs continuously. Merrymore has a Nanni engine offering smooth cruising, coupled with hydraulic steering means she is easy to control (but does not have the best turning circle). Lovely rear dinette means a cosy place to eat and relax in, very good JVC stereo and decent speakers in saloon. Heads are compact at the rear but more spacious forward of the helm. Both toilets smelt upon takeover and would do with a tank rinse which Barnes Brinkcraft do not do even for private pump outs you pay for. Shaver points have been removed in both heads. Otherwise a very nice cruiser, and I do love the design but I would not hire her again but instead choose something like Sunlit Horizon from Horizon Craft. Get the same boat, but pay a lot less and have a better kept interior. For 2012 Merrymore has bow thrusters fitted and perhaps a slight refresh to interior may also be on the cards as to the upholstery.
